First incubator hatch, with shipped and local eggs

Gosh, I loved my Swedish flower hen. She was from a commercial hatchery but still gorgeous and fun to watch.

First incubator hatch, with shipped and local eggs

I hope you have all the success and your expectations are blown out of the water! I will definitely still try shipped eggs again next year.

First incubator hatch, with shipped and local eggs

Day 22! First pip was around 4pm on day 20, and that chick hatched early on day 21. Final counts 2/12 shipped eggs 5/8 local eggs 2/2 home eggs 1 shipped egg had a large saddle air cell, was malpositioned, and died in the egg. The other was my dark egg, which proved to not be developed at all...

First incubator hatch, with shipped and local eggs

Day 18- It’s lockdown day! 12 eggs made it to this point, 11 with very happy movement and one far too dark to see into. I’m so excited for hatch day :wee 4/12 shipped eggs 6/8 local eggs 2/2 home eggs

First incubator hatch, with shipped and local eggs

(Sad) Day 10 Update Another round of candling today- lots of veins and movement! I spent a lot of time looking at my questionable eggs tonight. Looked at lots of images to compare what I was looking at. I’m a little wary of exploders, so I pulled all the eggs where I was 100% certain I saw...

First incubator hatch, with shipped and local eggs

Day 7 update! Most of the eggs seem to be looking good. There are two I think have definite blood rings And then 1 (plus two porous ones that are hard to tell) that I think might be infertile/early quitters? I may remove the blood rings now, and then wait until day 10 to recheck the...

First incubator hatch, with shipped and local eggs

I know they can be so resilient! A lot of hatching threads can be doom and gloom so it’s hard to not just focus on what could go wrong. I definitely plan to update! That’s part of the reason I started this thread since I read several where you never learned the final hatch outcome.

First incubator hatch, with shipped and local eggs

Hi All! Been several years since I posted (when I first got chicks) but I figured I’d add catalog my experience of trying to hatch incubator eggs. I have a roo, so I let my Cochin sit on a clutch of 12 in spring of 2020. We ended up with 6 chicks! I didn’t separate “mama” so I think most of...

    First predator loss today...

Hmmm, we have about an acre lot with lots of trees and bushes scatted everywhere so I think this could only really work over the open field parts that the girls are smart enough to stay away from. Something to consider though!

    First predator loss today...

Definitely planning on confining them for a bit! Hope to get the roof done soon.

    First predator loss today...

Today was a sad day. I came home on my lunch break to find my Sicilian buttercup beheaded in a cloud of feathers near our hedge :( head was bloody and looked like the crop was partially eaten, but no other injuries. She was still warm and I didn’t want her life to go to waste so I skinned her...

Run Construction w/ Deep Litter- Lumber Dimensions, etc?

Sorry I didn’t see this earlier! We still haven’t got the roof on yet  but I really like how it turned out overall! I used two layers of 4x4s for the base and 2x4s for the rest of the frame. The door still need some work (wonky construction lumber not fitting just right). I also...

    Coop Renovation Progress [pic heavy]

This is the Lavender now...he/she still has me stumped but I feel is looking less boy-ish. (Face is redder than normal due to heat I think) My buckeyes look way more masculine at this point and the lav’s comb hasn’t grown for some time.

Yes! She’s a Swedish flower and her name is Flora. She along with the EE and OE in the pop door picture are my bravest and most personable chicks.

    Coop Renovation Progress [pic heavy]

Sunday was move-in day for the chicks! I still have some things to work on but I am happy with how things turned out. (Ta-dah! You can see the beginnings of the run to the left) (A decent ramp is on the to-do list. Not many chicks have ventured up to the roost yet) (Re-did the window...
