Your birds are even hardier than mine! I keep the doors shut at -15 C unless it's been a long run of -25 to -30C then I open the doors make sure they have access to warm food and fresh hay/straw. Wow! Colder than that and they won't move outside unless they absolutely have to! Wow!!:bow
Don't worry the addiction will grow along with your experience and one day soon you'll be able to help a newbie with something you've had to deal with or even a veteran who has come up with something they've never had to deal with before but you've done where your bird(s) have not just survived...
My birds are outside all day in those temps, even when there's several feet of snow. We clear the snow throw down some straw and let them out to play. Birds get cabin fever too!
Straw! Lots and lots of straw! Warm, like baby bathwater or room temperature warm water at least twice a day and maybe a heat lamp if your area and birds aren't accustomed to this kind of winter weather. Reduce or filter the ventilation, water doesn't carry well in really cold weather so...
I have been living and raising birds in Northern Alberta Canada hay and/ or straw is the absolute go to! 0 degrees F or lower is just an average winter for us, not the occasional cold snap. Good insulation is another absolute must. If it is just a cold snap for you, you can close the window or...
I'm in Northern Alberta Canada, winter is a lifestyle when doing anything.
In the temps you are describing I would absolutely cover the ventilation! I have a window about the same size. Our coldest days were about -30 C I had their window open just marginally and still as packed as they were...
I have only had it when some egg membrane gets stuck on them right after hatching. Otherwise I wash their butts within 24 hours after hatching, acv in their water, no problemo!
Howard is doing great! He got the cut on Saturday. It winked out again at me this morning but it was only the tip which was perfectly sealed, healed and looking perfectly normal. So big relief! I was a little concerned that maybe I didn't take enough off. I had images of septicemia and other...
So I gave him the snip. there was only a drop of blood and I sealed it with some salves and oils. It popped back out yesterday evening, I pushed it back in and checked him this morning, still in. This afternoon it was popped out again (not a lot, just the tip. I cut it just below the...
I was going to give him a few more days but the end is dead and dragging it out won't serve him at all. Please wish me luck I'm going to give him a cut right away.
Thank you very much, between you and Wyorp I think I have enough information. I think I will give him another few days to a week at most to see if there is more improvement but the colour hasn't really changed in a week and I am thinking I may have to do the cut.
Is there a lot of bleeding when...
Hi it's me with another freaking prolapse! This time with a Drake. This is way out of my comfort zone and to be honest I do not know when it actually happened. It was noticed on Saturday and my daughter and I have been treating it much the same way as we did with Helia --Shout out to the...
Hi I don't know if anyone does this but I thought I would share my experience with it. After incubation when the chicks hatch I don't put them under a light anymore. I literally give them a Mother Bottle. What that is is actually a jar usually at least half a gallon to a gallon jar of you...
Thank you. As I said I was terrified all the way through both times! What's funny is when I mentioned my shout out for help I actually didn't realize that I accidentally pm'd another member rather than a public cry for help. LOL! This is how technically stunted I am!😖
