Utah zoning law, right to farm law

I suggest calling and finding out what the noise limits are. Depending on where you live, the responsibility may fall on you to prove the chicken is quieter than that limit or be on your neighbor to prove it's louder than the limit. Either way, a cheap sound pressure monitor from Amazon is a...

Needed- Example letter to City Council members

I agree this is a nationwide topic, so I'm happy to discuss it here. I don't have an example letter, but I can share my strategy and general thoughts. I researched common myths about keeping chickens and complaints that people have about chickens to understand what the concerns might be. From...

    City of La Marque

I realized one other generally useful strategy: call your local code enforcement officer and ask :) They are likely to find out eventually, so you might as well start off asking their advice on the topic. I've found most of those folks to be very helpful when they are called for advice in...

    City of La Marque

I don't live nearby, but I found the code of ordinances for the city of La Marque Texas: https://library.municode.com/tx/la_marque/codes/code_of_ordinances Sec. 8-8. - Keeping animals and fowl within 100 feet of an occupied building under certain conditions prohibited. It shall be unlawful for...

Curious about the statistics on rise of backyard flocks nationwide

There is a USDA report from 2013 that talks about "urban" chicken ownership in Denver, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City. It claims that 0.8% of the houses on less than an acre kept chickens, but that 4 percent of houses without chickens planned to get them in the next 5 years. I agree that...

Surveys on chicken keeping practices to help inform local code?

Thanks for the feedback N F C. My hope is to get feedback on the survey questions from chicken-keepers nationwide and apply the results to Englewood. Here are the questions I've come up with so far: Do you keep birds on your property? No, but my neighbor does keep birds No, but someday I want...

@accdntlrooster thanks for your thoughts. I wonder if you could share your experience about managing smells, rodents, and whether you have culled any birds on your property? The current englewood code says that all manure must be removed from the property within 7 days. I would prefer for it...

Neighbor Complained to Town - Received Citation for Domestic Nuisance

One thought would be to get cameras that record movement of the hens. If it would require too many cameras to cover their whole range-space perhaps you could record just the edges of your yard. That would let you show if the hens were/weren't where the neighbor said they were.

1 step forward 2 steps back

Local board protocol is local - I suggest trying to find someone else who has gone before the board and ask their advice. You might want to call someone in the city and ask their advice about the coop and say "I'm just so excited I want to start building so I'll be ready in case I get approved...

    Model or Ideal Chicken ordinance?

Thanks for the thoughts on this topic. I'm also curious about what an "ideal" code might look like as well. As a proposal, how about: 8 hens are allowed, with another allowed for every 1,000 square feet of land above the minimum lot size. Coop no less than 15 feet from a main building on...

Surveys on chicken keeping practices to help inform local code?

I'm interested in gathering some data about how people keep chickens in my city of Englewood, Colorado (which has an existing thread about laws). The goal is to learn what factors in keeping chickens are important to residents so that the local code can reflect those values. It occurred to me...

    Englewood, CO

The Code Enforcement Advisory Committee in Englewood is seeking to update their code to be more specific about chickens. They are in the information gathering stage right now and no specific proposal has been made. It is likely that the new rules will be more restrictive than the current rules...

    Backyard Chickens Survey

Were the results of this survey ever posted? I see there's a summary of the results in another thread at https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1023886/chicken-survey/30 Thanks for sharing!

@aim0474 Thanks for your help in researching this issue. That pdf you linked is about the city of Englewood, New Jersey, check http://www.cityofenglewood.org/ That does make it tricky to find the right details.

I'm looking for this answer too. I did some searching and ended up going to the Englewood Municipal code and searching that for "Fowl". The three big sections I could find are: Quote: The biggest thing to me seems to be: Remove manure from the premises once a week - this might be...
