Hi all. I'm looking for some advice on a quick and easy coop.
We started with our hens a bit over a year. It's been a tough bit, as we've lost three. We lost two to a hawk a few months ago, and we just lost a gal to heat exhaustion a couple weekends ago. (That one was tough, as it was our...
We are in central Texas, just outside Austin. Winter temps are comfortable. Summer temps get hot.
And thanks for the heads-up to add my location. I went into my profile and added our city and state. :)
We live on 3/4 acres, so we're not going to be expanding into extreme farming or anything...
My wife and I are getting a free 16' x 8' Shed for a coworker's family member. We are looking forward to turning it into a larger coop that will accommodate a few more chickens. (We're down to three hens after losing two hens to an apparent hawk attack.)
The shed has double doors on both 8'...
I came home from work last Thursday at 5:30pm and gave the hens their treats. All five came running up and said hi, chattering all the way. A bit later around 6:30pm, I went out to close them up for the night, but only three hens came up.
I searched the yard for the missing girls and found what...
Thanks to all. I picked up some cracked corn for them to nibble on and generate some energy. I also put up a wind break (aka old tarp and old exercise mats) around the bottom of the run, as well as along a small run we have to a second coop. I also added a LOT of pine shavings to the nesting box...
Hi all. We live just outside Austin, and we're have a string of cold days coming and wanted to check in for advice to make sure our five gals stay okay during the cold.
The low tonight will be hovering around 39 degrees, nothing terrible. But over the course of the next few days, the temps will...
Hi all. Not sure if this is the right place to post this. I'll post something in the Texas thread as well.
We live in Texas, and our winter weather is usually pretty mild. BUT we have a string of cold days coming and wanted to check in for advice to make sure our five gals stay okay during the...
Thanks to all for the info. Our plan is to get SafeGuard and follow dosage listed by @KikisGirls.
@FlyingNunFarm, I think we'd be fine eating the eggs after dosing, but we have a 2 year old daughter to consider, too. For that reason, we'll discard eggs until 2 weeks after last dose.
Again...
Help me out. What do you use for your hens? We have 5 hens, and 1 of them has worms. (I've only seen one in its poop, but I know I have to treat them all.)
What do you use? How often do you give it? How long do you throw the eggs after giving them the treatment? NOTE: I was planning on using...
Hopefully this is a fairly easy question: At what temperature do you fully close up the coop to ensure that your hens will be okay overnight?
Over the last weekend, the temps got pretty chilly (for Texas, at least) - down to the mid 30s. This week should be better, but we know the "cold" temps...
Hi again, all. Quick background info:
* five hens, mostly free range in the backyard during the day
* free feed DuMor 16% Layer Feed from TS
* coop / poop board cleaned once daily
I was cleaning the coop this afternoon and saw a worm in some of the poop. I stared and stared and stared, and it...
Hi again, all. Looking for advice about our five gals. that we've had since May. They're all between 1-2 years old, apparently healthy, and free range for the majority of the day in our backyard.
Their egg production has dropped WAY down. We used to get 3 eggs a day, sometimes 4 (although it...
Before I ask my question, I have to say THANK YOU for all your wisdom! I visit the site fairly regularly but don't often post. Kind of a silent stalker. :) Anyway...
My wife and I have had our girls since last May. The family that gave us the hens told us some basic info about them, but we...
