Thank you to everyone who responded yesterday and helped me through my anxiety. I moved them all to a safer spot last night and my hen stayed with them all night. She accepted them!
The chicks started to stir and one of them peeked her head out from the hen's wing. My hen pecked her on the head. The chicks didn't seem to mind it too much and didn't move. The hen stared at the chick for awhile and then pecked her again and it sounded hard this time. I freaked out but the...
Thank you so much. At this point do you think it would be ok for me to walk away and just check on them every 15 minutes or so? I thought I did enough research on this but now I'm just getting stressed out.
Eggs would have been my preferred method too, but I wanted vaccinated chicks. I've also heard that hens can reject chicks from eggs they lay on so I at least wanted to be able to be present to observe. With eggs, you don't know when they'll hatch.
Should I be taking them away and trying again at night? Everyone seems content right now but it does seem like my hen just doesn't realize that they are there.
I got 3 two day old chicks that I put under my broody hen. I showed one to her at first and she pecked it, which worried me. Then I took the three chicks and put them under her and they are all sleeping. I can see their little heads peeking out from under my hen.
I read that she should be...
I've never had a broody hen raise new chicks for me and I'm wondering how it's done if I decided to do it. Currently my nesting boxes are off the ground. Would I need to put a nesting box on the floor of a coop? Or would I need to set up a whole new mini coop away from the flock?
Hi,
Are there any breeders that you've bought chicks from with positive results?
I ordered from a hatchery once and the result was so bad, I never want to do that again.
There's a small breeder local to me (Buckaboo farms) that I've purchased chicks from before, and I only have positive things...
I wish I had taken a picture when I noticed it because since then I've been trying to catch her do it again without any luck. I waited out there what felt like forever today, long enough that I started to wonder about a bowel obstruction, but then she finally dropped this tiny stool.
This is...
I was noticing watery droppings for a week or so but couldn't figure out who was doing it. I was out in the yard yesterday and finally figured out who was responsible. I plan to spend more time out there today to see if she is consistently having watery droppings.
If she is, do I need to do...
I've just had my heart set on a few breeds for awhile and nearby places are only selling them as straight run.
I know large scale hatcheries sell sexed chicks but I've always felt uncomfortable ordering from the large places because I wonder how their chickens are treated.
Any ideas of what to do with roosters? I'm considering ordering straight run for the first time but want to have a plan for what to do with roosters. Last time I got an accidental rooster I just kept him, but I don't have the capacity to have multiple males.
I don't care if someone takes them...
