Not sure if this is a general egg question, or disease question, so posting both places (sorry for redundancy). We found this granular substance in egg white of a fresh cracked egg this morning. All chicks seem healthy, not sure what this could be or if this egg is safe to eat?
I'm a bit perplexed this morning. We found this granular substance when we cracked open an egg, in the egg white mucous. Any ideas what it could be? Chickens all seem healthy and happy. It is composed of a bunch of small granules clustered together.
Hello! A bit of a long story here, but the bottom line question is that we have a 2 week old orphan silkie and I want to get her a friend but the only option is another 2 week chick from a neighbor who has already imprinted on a mother hen. Is this going to work?
I tried to get our broody hen...
I have been all over this site searching for info regarding broody hens, but it seems a bit mixed, and my scenario seems different enough from others that I thought I'd just ask my own question today.
Background: I have a 15 month old Buff Orpington who was isolated due to injury 4 months ago...
Thank you! For the grower feed we added a feed with 18% protein, and the layer feed is 16% protein. I mixed it 50/50 with OS and grit on the side, and added a second waterer just in case. Sounds like maybe switching over to the all flock feed at a higher protein content may be the next step...
I changed the feed to a grower/layer mix, and let the gals free range this afternoon, introducing Rocky back mid-morning. They mostly kept to themselves, but there were a few times that the Americauna or the Orpington would charge across the yard and peck poor Rocky. We set up some mirrors and...
Yes, the more I read, the more it is apparent they are not getting enough protein (when they free-range they hardly touch their food, and I know they do not get enough protein out in the yard this time of year). How long should I provide the 50:50 layer:grower feed before I re-introduce Rocky...
I was wondering about nutrition. I feed them Beaver Brand Layer Feed, with added oyster shell and grit on the side. I mix in garlic and kale powder as well. I've been giving them meal worms as a treat in the afternoon, but am trying to get them to eat their feed first and foremost. This did...
Hello! I have a very small and diverse backyard flock. 3 birds in total, an Americauna, an Orpington, and a Barred Rock. They were hatched and raised together, and are 23 weeks old this week. The Ameraucana and the Orpington have just started laying eggs (in the winter time no less!).
The...
Thank you everyone, again. Final update, I took her to the vet and they were going to keep her overnight for surveillance. Just got my update call from them. She was starting to perk up and get more energy, but apparently the yolk began to swell and pressed on her lungs. She has passed away...
Thank you so much for your replies and advice! As and update, Shortcake began becoming more lethargic and did not leave the brooder at all yesterday. I took her to our chicken vet, and she has reported that due to the traumatic travel and stress in the first few days of life, Shortcake did not...
I have 4 new chicks, they are 5 weeks old. 2 buff orpingtons, 1 barred rock, and 1 americauna. 3 came from a local breeder, but one arrived via mail, her name is Shortcake (she is a buff orpington). She originally came with 3 other mates but the other 3 died in transit, so I know she had a rough...
Greetings! I am a new chick mamma, and have had a bit of a rocky start to chicken raising. I am wondering if there are any recommendations or nutrients, (or any advice really!). to help my little buff orpington thrive. There is a bit of a backstory here, with a few setbacks early on. My little...
