Great suggestions. His leg is still attached at the thigh and the joint is moving nicely now on day 3. :) My roo was 9 months old.

For sure. The meat looks so nice, I would have liked to turn it into something delicate and delicious, but he was a very strong rooster so I was imagining him to be tough. I like to roast birds, but with roosters I read stew-pot is tastiest. I portioned out the meat into breast on the bone...

Safe to eat a rooster not dressed out immediately after being killed?

The neighbors dog escaped and got to my dominant rooster before his owner could pull him off. This was my biggest rooster but he was destined for the pot because his temperament was starting to get on my nerves--while it's great for protecting the girls, the aggression toward me was not very...

Zest doesn't know how to crow properly

I have an Icelandic flock and this is how my roos started out as well. They mostly mastered it eventually but some better than others. It's a more high pitched crow with different "syllabification" than other roosters I've known.

    first eggs as days shorten

I have two Icelandic hens that hatched in mid May. One hen just started laying about two weeks ago. I get an egg every other day. I live up north, so sun up is about 9:15 and sundown is 4:30 right now and we're losing light fast. It's been 1 degree at night and about 10-15 during the day here...

Cheers for the tips. Around what age/stage would you estimate my Icie males would start harassing the ladies? And what would harassment look like? They are six months now and a fairly cohesive team.

I was thinking that from the start and planned on eating the others and only keeping my favorite. But when I only ended up with two hens, now I need the boys to create warmth in the coop. They also have great personality and instinct so I’ll probably move them to a bachelor pad or sell them. I...

Hi there, I am a new member but have frequently used this group in the past. This year is the first time I’ve been able to start my own flock of backyard birds. I haven’t had a consistent backyard as I’ve moved a lot, but I’m finally home on 10 acres in rural Alaska. I live with my partner...
