    Why have chickens?

Although I was raised in the 60's and 70's my family and rural lifestyle made it more like the 40's and 50's, the same values but with more conveniences. Growing up, a handshake was more binding than a legal contract. There were dishonest people but everyone knew who they were. I would rather...

    Why have chickens?

Sadly, there will always be dishonest people out there. Sure, try to reach an agreement with her, but don't count on it. Social media is good option to point out dishonesty but that can backfire on you and make you look like the "bad guy", that's why this site is the closest thing to social...

    Why have chickens?

We are on the same page. I do understand better the reaction of farmers as they have had to deal with the death of animals far more than "hobby farmers" like me. They just become desensitized to it, they kind of have to. I think they just do what they do without emotion even though I don't think...

Official BYC Poll: How do you keep your flock warm in the winter?

It can get really cold here in the western mountains of Maine and stay that way for weeks on end. I have heavy breed chickens, insulated coup with south facing double pane windows, use heat lamps set up on a thermostat, and a vent fan.

Dual Temperature Regulated Thermostat for Water and Heat Bulb?

I got a thermostat controller designed for green houses. It controls both heating and cooling. I have a bathroom "fart fan" :) set up to come on at 34F and shut off at 30F, vented to the outside to control moisture. The heating side is set up to turn on a heat lamp at 30F and shut off at 34F. My...

What did you name your Rooster?

Love those classic type names. My brother had a dog named Lord Lockingvar McDuff :)

What did you name your Rooster?

Love Buff Orpingtons :) We've had a few roosters with names, usually related to their appearance or behavior, and usually named by the grandson or the lady of the house, I prefer not to name them, but I did one. They had named one "White Bird", one was "Friend Bird", another was "Two Feathers"...

    Why have chickens?

I understand what you are saying. I am very happy you have the space to have a garden and fruit trees. I also have those. Love your chickens, fruit trees, and garden. Enjoy life. All the best to you :)

    Why have chickens?

I have no problem with people having chickens as pets. I wasn't trying to twist what you said, it was a misunderstanding, please forgive me. True, your government is not a purely socialist government. It is a social democracy, similar to where my cousins live in Norway. Pure democracies allow...

    Why have chickens?

When my great grandfather was almost 92 he was tired of life. Although he was in pretty good health he just couldn't do all the things he once did, and he had done all that he wanted to. He went out his way on his terms. He chose to just stop eating. Because this was his mindset he showed no...

    Why have chickens?

So your attitude is, not kill animals but let our elderly die, or kill them. WOW, that says it all right there!
