    Button Quail and fake eggs

That is a thought. I always try to collect any eggs shortly after they lay. The problem that keeps recurring is that overtime, the girls all really want to sit on a nest of eggs and that is when trouble starts. They get seriously aggressive and attack everything that pisses them off (which...

    Button Quail and fake eggs

I like my little quail, but these little egg laying machines do pose some issues when you have them as pets. It turns out that hens always become a problem when they start laying eggs. These little girls can become fierce when they are sitting on eggs (interestingly, as soon as the eggs hatch...

    Button Quail Hatching

My incubator has a function that moves the eggs. In fact, my incubator is so good that it could hatch a rock. The chick I previously mentioned was indeed the last. I checked through the remaining eggs and there was only one that did not hatch and died in the egg. He did not pip. All of the...

    Button Quail Hatching

I have hatched a few sets of Button quail before, and they have all been rather lackadaisical with the hatching process. Generally, I have found that all that will hatch will do so in about an 8 - 9 hour time frame. Not like wild quail of any kind that generally all hatch in less than 2 hours...

    Previously in the wrong place

You can bet on that. Both of those little girls were pretty fierce. One of them even took me on a time or two. Did just what you suggested two days ago. It took awhile, but they are both pretty much back to normal and they are keeping close company again. Life is peaceful once again without...

I thought about doing that. But a little hard to do for pets that live in my office. They are like some trees. They need a certain number of hours of light a day to kick in the hormones.

Well, I think everything will be ok. One of them is still feeling pretty lost, but I think they will be over it in a couple of days. Now the question becomes how long before they start laying eggs again?

    Damn Quail!!!

That's kind of what I thought. I already pulled their nests and they are both wandering around and haven't yet noticed it. Should I expect a lot of mournful button quail calls or button quail bitching for the next day or two?

    Damn Quail!!!

No, I am just tired of it. But yes, their behavior is entirely hormonal. It's a direct relationship. So any effort to mitigate egg laying (probably not possible except by taking their ovaries out) is to define what actions drive the hormones.

    Damn Quail!!!

I decided on the plan. I am going to remove their nests today and see how it all works out. I will update anyone interested after I give a day to see how it goes.

    Damn Quail!!!

They do have the best dust bath in the world and love using it. Their behavior really is no different than almost any fowl. It's just that any fowl I previously had were to lay eggs. I never even thought about stopping egg laying with fowl. I know you cannot eliminate it, but I am sure...

Cool. Tomorrow is the big day! Not quite ready to face it yet. One thing I learned from this. I will never, ever stroke one of those girls ever again. Bad move. That's what did a lot to cause the problem in the first place. But then had there been a rooster there I would have ended up in...

    Damn Quail!!!

I am not enjoying them now. That is why I am trying to figure out how to eliminate/mitigate the brooding problem.

    Damn Quail!!!

I did that with their parents when we sold our place. They were all living outside in my aviary. These two have spent their whole lives inside and don't have any love for the out of doors. Nah, I just have to figure out how to get their minds (and hormones) right.
