I've almost read the whole discussion.
Interesting to read and thanks to all of you who contributed!
@LaurenRitz
When you write about your breed crosses: Which breed is the abreviation "BA"?
And what does "BYM" mean?
Greetings!
So back to topic! Also thanks to @No Coop No Problem for sharing all this especially the wonderful photos!
I live with a family and some other people in a big house in the countryside. We have about 2300m2 for our poultry.
I live here since 3 years and the hawks killed so many chicks and...
In Latin it's Martes martes. They live here in Germany and can climb trees.
Yes, but I asked because this nest-box in the tree sounded unsafer than just letting her hatch in the brush.
Isn't it totally unsafe for the broodies to hatch their chicks in there?
I mean, wouldn't a raccoon dog easily see the broody and eat her? Wouldn't it be safer for her to hatch a clutch deep inside a dense brush?
I'm glad that you're interested in the Deutsches Buschhuhn :)
I don't own them yet, but it looks good that I convinced my chicken mate that I keep our chickens with to get a Deutsches Buschhuhn cock so that we can mix our own survival chickens. Next year, I also wanna buy some hatching eggs near...

2: When do you let your chickens free range? Are there some of them free-ranging already?
3: Did you know that there's a German breed called "Deutsches Buschhuhn" (German bush fowl) that lays green eggs...
I even found his videos more inspiring than his book because I could see the chicken run and live. Also, his attitude and behavior when one or many of his chickens died was eye-opening for me. He just saw it objective: "Only the strongest survive."
I'm very sad that he deleted the videos...
I agree. He changed my mindset. I always thought that if I kept my chickens properly, none of them would be killed by a predator. But it's not like that at all.
I wanted to watch his videos a lot times more to remember every little important information. Now it's not possible anymore :'(
My guinea fowl hen Petra has gained a lot of weight the last few weeks. Since some weeks she layed almost every day an egg into the chicken coop into the same nest.
Today, suddenly there were a lot of down feathers from her.
I've recently been told that ducks put a lot of down feathers into...
