What happened to your chicks? I have 7 week old chicks that just ate through a window screen I had on top of their brooder. It was enough for them to break out of it, so not an insignificant amount. I'm worried about whether it might kill them or if they'll pass it easily enough.
Hi all. Being in full recognition of what the previous poster said about chickens being unpredictable living beings and not machines with guarantees, I am wondering if anyone knows to what extent chickens biological processes are influenced by proximity or other environmental factors? For...
Thanks for playing. I ended up reaching out to Hoover's and they responded very quickly with their take on the three. Here it is:
"It looks like the darker one is likely a production blue (that may be the one that you are calling a rhode island blue).
The americana and the olive egger are a...
I purchased an olive egger, americana, and rhode island blue, all of which came from Hoover's Hatchery. All are just over 21 weeks old now. Here's a photo of each of them, along with two of their eggs, in case that helps. The greenish egg comes from the reddish colored chicken, and the brown egg...
Update: haven't had a lady lay in the coop for a few days now. All of those that are laying have figured out how to use the nesting box. All it took was my catching each one individually in the act and stuffing her in the box for them to catch on. I also left a couple of real eggs in each box. I...
I saw one of my young ladies sitting in the nesting corner they made, so I picked her up and put her in the nesting box, which had two eggs that I'd placed there. I'm pleased to report that she stayed on her own and laid an egg. Then, a day or two later, I saw her back in the nesting box on her...
I believe I have just two laying so far based on the number of eggs and evidence I've seen of them hanging out in the coop during the day all of a sudden. I have six chickens total and two nesting boxing. There are two different corners that have been selected. I've pulled back the curtains and...
Thanks for both of your responses. Here's a photo of the nesting boxes plus one of the corners they have made into the nest. It won't work for this corner to be their nest, since the eggs are getting a fair amount of poop on them. I could potentially put something to block the entrance to the...
Hi all. I know there have been a lot of posts on here about chickens not laying in their nesting boxes, but I couldn't find any that explicitly mention use of the deep litter method in their coop, so posting this in case others using that method have had similar experiences. A couple of my...
Thanks so much. I guess I'll wait a few more weeks to see what types of eggs I'm seeing--and whether any of them crow. Hopefully, they are all pullets, since roosters are illegal in my city.
You think the brown one is the americana/EE, and not an olive egger? If so, then which one might be the olive egger? For the BCM, I can't find any examples online of cockerels at 18 weeks who don't already have fairly grown in copper saddle feathers. Have you seen cockerels that look like mine...
