    Little Cochin with balance issues...

She perked up for a bit but now looks like she's fading fast. I don't think she can be saved. There was definitely a leg issue but she's also just really weak. The pedialyte perks her up for a minute or two. I tried giving her yolk from a hard boiled egg but she won't eat. This sucks.

    Little Cochin with balance issues...

after further inspection, her right hock seems to be a bit bruised looking. I'm thinking possibly a slipped tendon. When I popped in to check on the chicks and found her like this, the others were trampling her a bit, so maybe it had just happened. I've got her in my lap now. I found...

    Little Cochin with balance issues...

I've tried clear pedialyte and she perked up a bit, but still can't keep herself upright. I'm thinking maybe there's an issue with her right leg, although I don't really know how to tell.

    Little Cochin with balance issues...

For those that follow My Pet Chicken on FB, you may have seen their post yesterday about chicks abandoned at the post office. I have them now, picked them up this morning from the person who got them yesterday. 2 didn't make it. From what I heard, they'd been at the PO for more than a day...

How long do chickens live for?

really? My Australorp hen stopped laying completely right at the 3-year mark. Not a single egg from her in 2 years. I thought that was normal.

Heating pad instead of heating lamp

I have mine on a heat pad. My "brooder" is currently a small cat carrier, since I only have three babies, and needed to set up something quick when my broody decided not to be a good mom. I'll move them to something bigger when they need it. the heat pad I have doesn't have adjustable settings...

    mixing different ages?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this one already, but figured it didn't hurt to ask. I have three chicks in the brooder now. They arrived at the feed store on Wednesday morning, probably hatched Monday. I've finally got my mom sold on a silkie or two, but I'm having a hard time finding...

    Hen killed chick!

My bad momma sat on her empty nest for a day or so, but now she's up and about again. I have to keep telling myself that she's not a bad chicken, just a bad momma.

    Hen killed chick!

I had almost the exact scenario happen last night, except my chicks were from a feed store, placed under a broody. I got up several times to the sound of peeping, the same chick kept getting out from under mama, I'd put her back. This morning it was a different chick. When I put that one back...

    Naming inanimate objects?

My car is named Car. I do talk to it. Apparently it has a personality similar to my own. At least, that's what my ex always said. Not sure that was a compliment to either of us, honestly, lol.

Lionhead - what color is he?

oops, i didn't realize that was your site you were linking to... he's a cutie, whatever he is. If I were allowed to have rabbits again, I'd love him! Lionheads are my favorite breed.

Lionhead - what color is he?

that's right, he shouldn't have any agouti if he were black otter... I never got into any of the agouti colors, so I don't know a lot about them. Whatever he is, he's not a black tort. Maybe in person his colors are easier to see?

Lionhead - what color is he?

he looks like a double mane black otter, but I'm far from an expert.

Kitten rescue with a sad ending

So yesterday early evening, I got a call from a lady at the cat rescue i sometimes work with. A man had come into the store while they were doing adoptions, said he found two newborn kittens under his truck. One of them had already died, and he was asking about what to do. So I told him to bring...

Parents who have full access to their kid's Facebook account?

i think its important for parents to monitor their children's internet usage, and facebook is a really easy way to gain dangerous information from someone. its not about using it to see who your kids are hanging out with, that's an invasion of their privacy, sure. but making sure they aren't...
