    Two hens won’t go outside

I noticed the Bantam also ducks when the rooster gets near. On closer look, its back is torn open by the rooster spurs. So it’s very likely overbreeding related issue. I’m not sure on chicken jacket, but definitely trimming the spurs this weekend.

    Two hens won’t go outside

They’re out in the yard today on their own with the rest for the first time in weeks. So all it took was forced being outside for a day I guess. They’re still standing together and slightly more cautious and looking around. But at least they’re out.

    Two hens won’t go outside

I don’t think so. The flock has gotten alone fine. The RIR does duck down for breeding every time the rooster gets near, and her shoulders have slight signs of mounting damage. Could potentially be overbreeding? The flock used to be larger but down to 6 hens and a rooster for overwinter. They...

    Two hens won’t go outside

They enjoyed some dust bath in the chicken run today and Bantam laid an egg. I guess I’ll see if forcing them be out in the run for a couple of days help.

    Two hens won’t go outside

Since Jan/Feb probably. I’m not noticing anything obvious about sickness. Perhaps they need to be dewormed again?

    Two hens won’t go outside

It’s a bit hard to tell since we’re not always around and the egg color of the Bantam is brown like the rest. We do have a new chick group from Feb with a Bantam offspring so at least Feb for her. RIR’s egg is a bit lighter and I don’t remember when was the last time I saw her egg.

    Two hens won’t go outside

Two of my hens are behaving weirdly. They’re constantly trying to sit in the same nesting box, or stay on the roost during the day and won’t go out to the yard with other chickens. I’m not certain whether they’re still laying, likely no. They’re not really broody either, because at night, they...

Will broody hen be affected by other chick sound?

Update. Our second hen has successfully hatched 10 out of 11 eggs unaffected by the chicks barriered off in the same brooder :). Just in time for the first batch of chicks to graduate from the brooder with their mama. Now this batch has the whole brooder to themselves.

Will broody hen be affected by other chick sound?

I’m assuming their area is well heated right? We made the mistake of introducing a batch of one week old chicks we incubated to the hen on the day that the eggs she was brooding were hatching. We lost 5/8 of the newly born because the hen was distracted by the one week old. Somehow the newly...

Will broody hen be affected by other chick sound?

Thanks! I’m pretty happy with it. My dad and I built it. Front panel hinges down and top panel hinges up. It sits inside the main coop. We’ve had rat snakes broken into the coop before so we wanted this to be 100% snake proof.

Will broody hen be affected by other chick sound?

Thanks, we’re setting up the divider right now :). The second hen is in the nesting box picking pine shavings to put around her hehe.

Will broody hen be affected by other chick sound?

We have a 4’x5’x3’ brooder that currently houses a mama hen plus a dozen 1-2 weeks old chicks. We’re looking to hatch more eggs and looks like we have another hen starting to go broody. I’ve read somewhere that the sound of new born chicks is what “knocks” broody hens out of sitting on eggs...
