You said you're using cedar get rid of it ASAP. The cedar oil is deadly to chickens. Start there and see what happens.

When do rosecomb bantams start laying?

Bantams aren't much different than large fowl. 6-8 mos depending on the breed. The rooster may try his advances sooner but she won't be receptive to him until she's ready to lay.

No help needed just want to share my sadness

In the last 3 days I've had to euthanize 2 birds. One girl had already survived a few injuries but being a production bird hit a bad prolapsed vent and had pieces of soft egg hanging out of her. I decided while sad bc she was so sweet after her rough early life it was the best choice. Today I...

Why do I beat myself up about butchering a few cockerels.

I just recently butchered one 7 mo old cockerel I had raised from a chick. Got a straight run bantam batch. All boys but one. Rehomed most. Had 2 (in addition to my lead roo) and was trying to see how it would go. It was just too much. Stressed roos and hens. So I opted to keep the most chill...

    Rooster May Be Turning Aggressive?

You'd just have to keep him in a confined area (coop or covered run) on your property for 30 days or so and watch for things like raspy breathing, eye or nose discharge, etc. Things that could indicate respiratory which can spread fast if not checked early enough. Make sure he doesn't have any...

    Rooster May Be Turning Aggressive?

First off - you're absolutely right. SO MUCH to learn. I'm 5 yrs in and still learning. Anywho...your reaction when he nipped was great. You may have to continue this for a while til he gets the memo and gives up some of the fight. It's definitely possible the sound of chicks and spring coming...

new chicks, what is the best brand of food

It comes down to cost and preference. There's so many options. I always used the Dumor chick starter from TSC when I had chicks. Others prefer Purina or Manna Pro or something medicated or organic. Or maybe you have a local feed mill that sells chick feed. I stayed with TSC feed for a few yrs...

    Rooster May Be Turning Aggressive?

No expert by any means but I wonder if hearing chicks is throwing his need to protect into overdrive and hearing them come from behind a door you just came out of means (to him) you must be holding them hostage. I really don't know but they run on instinct and his instinct could be to protect...

Instinct or Aggression and what to do?

He definitely saw you as a threat to his hen which is good he's protecting them like others said. But he shouldn't go after you either. Carry him around, hand feed him treats, make him realize you are the boss without being mean/violent which can make him worse. My young 6 mo old cockerel (who...

Investigating chicken death - suspect mink

If not an owl then a raccoon. My mink encounter was just broken necks and drained of blood. All 16 birds in one night. Then it left and went for the live trap bait.

Need to rehome Red Bantam Cochin Rooster

6 mos old. Located in Schuyler County, NY. Ended up with several roos in my last batch of chicks and he's the last I need to rehome. Little bit more "active" as he's maturing but fairly nice little guy.

Official BYC Poll: How Long Have You Been Raising Chickens?

Going into my 5th year with them. Lost my first flock to a mink a little after they turned 1 and started over shortly after securing the coop better. Had always wanted them growing up and finally moved out to the country. I love having them. On really rough days I just go out and sit and watch...

Sweeter Heater vs Plate Style (EcoGlow/Premier1) Outside Brooding

I've only used a heat plate for my outdoor brooder. Did early spring and late summer chicks here in NY and both batches did really well. April we don't quite have warm weather yet so I was worried but they did great and are now great layers in my flock! I didn't want to spend a lot in case I...
