Need some advice on giving a broody hen day-old chicks

OK, my goal is to get them to stop sitting on nothing and plucking out feathers. I guess "breaking" was the wrong word choice. Edited title accordingly. If their setting can be productive, that's preferable. They have been broody for a couple weeks now, one longer than the other.

Need some advice on giving a broody hen day-old chicks

Hi all, I have 2 broody hens that I want to get chicks for. I've done some reading on the subject and my local farm has chicks 1-3 days old. 2 questions: 1. My nest boxes are quite high off the ground and the peeps will not be able to get there. I have some temporary nest boxes that I've...

Hen not going to coop at night after 2 years

I have a speckled sussex hen (nearly 2 years old) who for the past 2 nights has not returned to the coop for bedtime. Without fail, all my girls have gone to bed as expected for years and now this one hen is defying her bedtime :-) Same hen. I don't close up until well after dark, so it is...

    electric fence

I am planning to put an electric fence around my garden to keep the groundhogs and rabbits out. I free range my chickens and guineas. Any suggestions for deterring the chickens from the fence or a unit that's good enough for keeping bad critters out but won't be too bad if chickens...

Unprotected free ranging in very rural areas?

We have been daytime free-ranging our small flock in rural PA for 3 years now and have lost only 1 hen to predators (type unknown). But we live in the woods with a lot of cover, they stay in the brush most of the day, and we only have brown/dark chickens that blend with our surroundings. We...

Hens won't use upper nest boxes?

Hi all, I have 10 hens, 4 of which are over a year old and 6 are about 24 weeks old. When my first batch of hens began laying, I only had some plastic bin nesting boxes on the floor of the coop. These worked great and they hens always used them. Then my husband decided to build some nesting...

    deformed necks?

I only helped with the third one because s/he had been at it for 3 days and was nearly out. And I didn't help much, but given the experience with the previous two i was concerned it was a hatching issue...guinea egg shells are very hard. Its the first one we lost - his neck was really bad -...

    Guinea fowl egg hatching now!

Well, the keet from Monday hatched all the way out by Tuesday @ 6 AM and is happily eating, drinking, and exploring his/her brooder box. I've had several batches of chicks so it was easy to set up quickly for the little guy. However, none of the rest of the eggs in my DIY 'bator are showing...
