    Silkie thread!

Excited to be raising my first silkie- there was one left at tsc! Amazed at how fluffy Queenie is turning out to be (hope she’s a girl!)

    Emergency! Chick Names!

I go with themes. Like Harry Potter. You could do Harry Ron hermione and Ginny.

    Sit'n on the porch

I got an assortment of chicks and the leghorn is the only one that will let me pet her!

Why do you have the breeds you do?

I went with what the local tractor supply had available, going with a variety so I could tell them apart and have an interesting looking flock. Year 1- 1 leghorn, 1 RIR, 1 black and 1 red sex link Year 2- 2 Easter eggers, 1 barred rock, 1 more leghorn, a silkie and a bantam Cochin from the...

Assorted bantam 3-4w curly wing feathers?

Wow, and thanks for the reference pic! (What a good looking chicken :) ) I was actually worried there was something wrong with this little chick since its feathers seemed to be growing so slow and wonky compared to the others, haha. Thanks all for the replies! I can try to pick it up to get...

Assorted bantam 3-4w curly wing feathers?

Sorry for my ignorance, but I am new to fancy chickens... got this chick because it had fluffy feet without knowing what it was. I had guessed black Cochin after some research, but I’ve never seen a chick with wing feathers like this before? Also, I’m afraid it might be a roo based on the way...

    Mislabeled Tractor Supply/Feed Store Chicks

Last year (first time chicken owner) my 4 pullets were as advertised- one Leghorn one RIR and 2 sex links- but this year I nabbed one single silkie (in profile pic) from the “starlight green egger” pullet bin! Felt like finding a shiny Pokémon when I noticed the grey beak. However, for some...

    Looking for impressions

Thanks!! :) No, we didn’t glue it; the top is actually built as is. I think the stiff wire mesh wrapped around the bottom with a bunch of horseshoe nails helps stabilize it. And then big screws about every foot to attach it to the base.

    Looking for impressions

Last year we got TSC’s largest prefab and modified it to be stronger and movable/tractor design. Made a strong frame to set it on, some improved hardware, welded wire to reinforce the chicken wire, and wheelbarrow wheels on levers. It is very heavy to roll with the extra wood, but my strong...

Do chickens naturally perch to sleep? Mine won’t

Thanks! We could certainly do that. We added a frame on the bottom for support and wheels to turn it into a movable/“tractor” design.

Do chickens naturally perch to sleep? Mine won’t

We got the biggest one Tractor Supply had- says it fits 18 birds but I don’t believe it. We will build a bigger run on before adding the new birds. Thanks all for the suggestions- maybe we will try to move up the poles a little higher and train them.

Do chickens naturally perch to sleep? Mine won’t

My 4 hens never did when we put them into the coop (a pre-fab kit with 2 poles a short distance above the floor) from the brooder. At 1yo they still sleep in a pile in one nesting box. I read about people showing them how by lifting them up but never made the effort. We have 6 chicks in the...

    “Starlight green egger” from TSC?

Thanks for the info! That’s interesting, I wasn’t familiar with wellsummers but it does look like one. Maybe a parent was one (the “brown egg layer”.)

New member intro- hello from VA

Funny! Mine is one of my smartest/boldest too. Here she was snatching up a strawberry top and running up the ramp to make sure her sisters didn’t get it!
