Thanks @Fire Ant Farm ! I'm going to look around in Austin for some seeds. I think using a native grass mix is a great idea, btw.

Nipple vs. cup waterers and auto fill

Hey everyone! There is a new article up that compares cup waterers, vertical nipples, and horizontal nipples. It has some great information and directly quotes from BYC posts on the topic, check it out! DIY Chicken Waterer - 3 Compared by PatchtoTable...

    Texas

Hey Y'all! Does anyone have luck in Central Texas planting nutritious grasses or grains for their chickens to pasture in? If so, what type? Is your area complete sun or does it also have shade? I want to plant some in my backyard for when I let me chickens free range for an hour each day. My...

Nipple vs. cup waterers and auto fill

I thought that might be the problem too, but no leaks. The chickens are really kind of biting the nipple instead of pecking it or drinking a droplet that is already suspended. They are fierce!

Topic of the Week - Raising Chicks

Hi! My chickens are now 3 months old! 2 Golden Sexlinks: Chole the Brave and Bjork, and 3 Easter Eggers: Jello, Chuckles, and Cacciatore. They were about a week old when I got them from my local feed store. What preparations do you make before hatching/buying chicks? Before I purchased the...

Nipple vs. cup waterers and auto fill

@theback40 So after I was having the problem with the vertical nipple waterers, I ended up using a heavy ceramic pet water bowl for the chicks, and changed out the water each day. Luckily it didn't get too dirty because the litter I used was sand. (Side note: I don't think I will use sand again...

    Texas

@kajira I don't have a garden as of now, but my husband and I are hoping to start one this coming year! I think that putting organic matter (I have an abundance of leaves right now!) in the run, and then raking it out and adding it to a compost pile when it starts to stink is the way to go...

    Texas

Hello! I just started with a backyard flock of 5 in Central Texas! My chickens are just starting to go outside, and I'm trying to decide the best way to maintain my run in an efficient way and to keep the smell down because I'm in a neighborhood. My run is covered, so that will help keep some...

Nipple vs. cup waterers and auto fill

I'm currently using vertical nipple waterers for my 3 week old chicks in the coop. The waterers don't leak on their own but when the chicks drink from them they are splashing water all around into their sand bedding! Has anyone else had the problem with the vertical nipple waterers making a wet...

    Water cups

I read that the water cups only work with adult chickens, as baby chicks don't have the pecking strength to push down the yellow lever. My 3 week old chicks are using vertical nipple waterers now, but I will be transitioning them to cup waterers. I think the cup waterers won't drip as much...

    Orpington chicks sex?

Judging by their combs, they are pullets. They are very well feathered and I would guess that they are a bit older than 4-5 weeks. Personally, I've only ever seen Buff Orpingtons, which are a solid color. These may be a mixed breed since they are not a solid color. Also, there is a forum...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I'm in week two with my MHP and 5 baby chicks and it's working wonderfully! My Easter Eggers are feathering out quickly.I can tell by the noises and chirps the chicks make that they are happy. Here's some photos of my experience with the MHP so far: Frame with heating pad. Just folded over...

    Deep Litter method or Sand??

Hi @Anujin , How often do you clean out your sand run, and what method do you use? I'm in Austin as well and debating between sand or the deep litter method in my run. I already have sand in my coop with my 5 chicks. (They are 2 weeks old and I'm using the Mama Heating Pad to raise them...
