I'm down to two Brahma hens from the same pets hop in Chaing Mai that "Thailand" is talking about. I feel the same way about them as she does; I think they have a lot of health problems because of inbreeding. I am also planning on doing what she is doing and crossing them with other lighter...
Wow, I don't know. It would depend on how they are stored. If I remember correctly, I think they are buried until the chick/duckling dies inside. Maybe there are different ways of doing it though.
Does this apply to chickens as well as ducks? I assumed that after they started mating, the next egg would be fertile as there is only one egg with a shell in the hen/duck's body. The rest are yolks, couldn't they be fertilized?
I'm not sure about the feather loss. . . . She was probably just cleaning her beak. You said that she stopped laying, and wants to hang around in her hutch all day, so that makes me thing that she might be "broody" (wanting to hatch a batch of eggs). Put about 10 eggs in her nest and see if she...
Do you have other female ducks that the same drake is mating? It could be that the drake isn't very fertile. I have a rooster that fertilizes eggs (I can see the "bull's eye") but none of the eggs hatch.
What I really want to know is why the eggs looked fertile, but then didn't develop? I broke open several eggs before I set some and could clearly see the "bulls eye". I studied pictures online to make sure I was seeing a fertile eggs. Yet, none of them even started?
I have a rooster who has been mating my four hens. I've seen him mate and it seems that he's doing everything he should be doing. I've checked the eggs the hens have laid, and they look fertile (bulls eye). I put 10 under a hen and today when I candled them (at one week) they were completely...
Don't feel so bad. It's hard not to become anxious during a hatch. I've done the same thing before and caused the babies not to make it. Now you will know for the next time around.
Since the baby disappeared, it makes me wonder the same thing. Maybe the first batch she started setting on were eaten by a rat or snake or something and then she laid more. Do you have more than one duck?
