I posted on here when we first got our chickens, worried that one of the Black Aus was a rooster. You all assured me that early tail feathers weren't a sign, in fact quite the opposite. And you were right.
So now I'm worried about the smallest chicken. haha The Buff Orps are only 7.5...
Yesterday I put two 1-day olds in with my two 3-week olds and my four 2-week olds. I threw in some alfalfa hay at the recommendation of someone on here. It worked really well; definitely try some sort of distraction when they all are together. They are doing great so far - one big happy family.
They're here! I got a small little brick of alfalfa hay and some pine pellets instead of the shavings we've been using. Also I finally added a nice stick to use as a perch. With all the excitement of the new things, the olders have barely noticed the tiny Buff Orps. I was worried that they were...
Just wanted to thank you for all the info Pauper! I think the feed store will hold them for a short period of time so I'm going to pick them up on Friday instead of Thurs so I can watch them. I might try the alfalfa too. I'll keep y'all posted on how it goes!
Linda, thanks for all that beautifully written info. On of my chicks in particular has a habit of sleeping like a corpse. Still gets me every morning.
I'm not a pet person, so it surprising how much they are growing on me already! They are a lot of fun. :)
I've got 6 chicks all under 3 weeks in a long plastic tub. This morning I went in and they had dumped out all the water in their waterer so that half of the pine shavings were wet. I have no idea how they did this since it wasn't tipped over?... (it's a plastic mason jar waterer meant for...
So is it safe to say that if they mix well the first hour or so, they will be fine? We're going somewhere in the evening after the newbies com, and I'm paranoid that I will come home and the olders will have eaten the BOs.
Congrats!
We got our first chicks 2 weeks ago. I'm embarrassed to admit that I was too scared to even hold them. What if they poop?!? But that has passed and they are so much fun. Plunging in head first is the best way to learn!
We ordered 8 chicks from the farm store, two of each breed. They've been coming in two by twos, and the transition has been fine. The last two - Buff Orpingtons - get here next week. By then the two oldest - the Black Australorps - will be over 3 weeks. Last night I was reading the reviews on...
And now that I know how to do it, a few more pics.
