Further update.
The chick run (maybe 12 weeks?) now has two sick ones. Possibly from not washing hands etc between runs as they are separated by 20+ metres. Do I pull them out or just assume they’re all sick now?
Finally some of the ones with closed eyes are incredibly swollen. The area...
We’ve also separated as many sick chickens as possible but there are still sick ones in the main run that I’m literally about to move to the hospital runs.
I’ve posted a few times in the past week about being on holiday whilst my in laws dealt with my rapidly dying flock. Local vet is useless but sent chicken off for necropsy.
Symptoms are:
Shaking heads, sneezing, stretching neck, watery eye, closed eye (tends to be one, not both), rattle when...
Interesting about sharpness. It's not sore to pick up when you collect by hand - you know how straw can get really prickly and scratch you up before you even notice. You don't need gloves to work with this.
I'll leave it for our run then.
What about jarrah sawdust? Any thoughts?
I've added my...
I’ll take a picture when we’re home but we use the pine already for mulch around plants. I would say there is no piece wider than an inch or thicker than an 1/4inch. They’re just long.
It’s a good point about drying them out.
We may try and see how we go.
Any signs to check for to show it...
Hi All, We can get a trailer load of pine offcuts for $10 from the local mill. They take the pine logs and put them through a grader and that removes all of the bark, outsides and whatever to make uniform poles.
Would it be ok for the coop? I can see lots on pine shavings but these aren't the...
Right, my father in law can’t actually remember if she said lice or mites (I checked just then with hK . He does remember the vet saying the mites/lice have sucked the life out of the birds. I guess it’s made it easier for the repository infection to take hold.
Vet gave him a few cans of...
I'm not a new chicken keeper but I'm new to sick chickens. Older chickens have lived happily for years. We moved to a new property in mid December. Cleaned out the coop but didn't spray it down or do anything that we (in retrospect) should have done. I'm kicking myself.
Just before we moved to...
Update. Inlaws took the chooks to the Vet on Australia Day. Birds were covered in lice (not sure what type, vet just said lice) and have a respiratory infection. I'll ask in a separate post but I'm baffled. Where have the lice come from? How are they suddenly covered?
I’ve asked them to pick up medication but I don’t think they’ve done it. It’s so frustrating being so far away.
I’m not actually sure what they have now. Now some older birds are sick. My father in law has sent me a video but it’s not letting me add it. They appear to be stretching their necks...
