My pekins have been laying eggs in filthy muddy duck-water. Does the protective coating make them safe to eat? I find them up to three hours after being laid. I love my duck eggs but don't want to get sick.
I'm already adding raw apple cider vinegar to their water with the above result. What were your hatch rates? My hatch was terrible (only 11/32 even hatched). I wonder if female embryos are more vulnerable to certain conditions, causing them to die before hatch day, while the possibly stronger...
Out of 11 eggs, only 1 grew up to be a hen. I assumed that each egg had a 50/50 chance so I guess it was just bad luck. While I'll enjoy eating some homegrown chicken, I was hoping for a few laying hens. Is there anything that we can do to affect the odds for next time? Any secrets?
They're chickens, not puppies. They don't need to be pet and played with. If they're fed, watered and reasonably protected from predators, they will be well cared for.
All from the same Murray McMurray order there was a mix of cornish x rock, white leghorn, white rock and wlr cornish. It seems like most of the pecking is from the leghorns but once the blood trail starts, the rest of the young birds start at it. The meaties don't eat at the other meaties as far...
That's what I do when I harvest a grouse. All that I eat are the breast and leg quarters. I did this the other day with some meaties when this problem started. I was hoping to not waste all that meat this time but I have very few options. Never again will I raise meaties with other breeds...
My leghorns (same age) started pecking their butts to the point of dripping blood. I moved them to pen #2 and those occupants are even worse. They are now out with the free range flock and it isn't quite as bad but I'm still thinking they'll be dead in the next day or two. If you folks tell me...
I'm in a situation where I need to butcher my 7 remaining meaties due to the rest of the flock eating them alive. At the same time I'm taking care of my 3 month old son by myself since my wife is unexpectedly away. I was wondering how bad it would be if I killed and plucked them, put them on ice...
Today I went out to check on my meat birds (7 weeks) and 4 of them had blood covered butts with lots of skin missing. I saw that just about every other young bird in there was guilty of pecking since they had blood on their faces. I noticed yesterday that one of my white leghorn cockerels was...
I've been anxiously waiting for the first egg from my black americauna X black copper marans. I was hanging onto the hope that it still could be a hen even though it had large tail feathers and sparred with a young roo. I'm no longer in denial since it crowed this morning, lol. My question is...
