My barred rocks are also known around here as "the Mean Girls"

Not yet, but perhaps with a rooster they might.

My barred rocks are also known around here as "the Mean Girls"

Thanks for the replies :) The only other way I can think to add to my flock of BR's might be to put a roo in with them and let some of them hatch out eggs, at least momma might be able to integrate them that way. Otherwise its probably going to be the separate coops rather than more carnage.

My barred rocks are also known around here as "the Mean Girls"

Sorry, should have included that they are not overcrowded at all, have lots of nest boxes and plenty to eat and drink. They are free ranged in the summer in our huge back yard and only in their coop in the winter. We got them from a hatchery and they all arrived here together. Thanks

My barred rocks are also known around here as "the Mean Girls"

Haven't been on for a while, kept losing my password and finally reset it. I have 20 barred rocks; I love them. They are great layers and started off laying normal sized eggs, hardly got any pullet eggs from them at all. They are great with us but not other birds I also had a flock or RIR's...

My meat birds poop is STINKY! What can I do??

Is fermenting their feed good for egg layers as well or just meat birds? Just wondering. We feed in one of those standard metal chicken troughs with the spinner on it. Our watering system is a sort of trough made out of five or six inch pvc pipe with end caps on it; we fill it from the five...

My meat birds poop is STINKY! What can I do??

Hi Cassie, We have been moving them daily until just recently when heavy rain followed by hot summer days resulted in the grass growing like wildfire. We've allowed them in the last week, two days per spot because of the tall grass, which is rich and juicy. However I think you're right, better...

What age do barred rocks generally start laying?

I was wondering about when my girls will start laying. I have 25 barred rocks, they are 12 weeks old right now and I will be so excited for our first farm fresh egg from happy chickens. We just moved them into a chicken tractor my hubby built for them, where they will remain until he finishes...

My meat birds poop is STINKY! What can I do??

I was wondering the same thing. I have 24 of them in a chicken tractor ala Joel Salatin's kind and we move them every other day. Their poo is just nasty. I also have 25 Barred Rocks and they hardly smell at all, even when their temporary pen was a bit overdue for a clean. Glad to hear though...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

In my newbie opinion (means take with some salt, lol) a perfect compromise between true free ranging and coop keeping is the chicken tractor. Look up Joel Salatin's method of housing his meat birds and egg birds. My hubby just built our cornishes a tractor ( a scaled down version, we have...

    chest bumping?

Our barred rock chicks are doing this "sumo wrestler" chest bumping thing and it's hilarious to watch, but since we'd never seen it before it had us wondering what on earth it was about. Now we know, lol!

my little barred rock chicks beat the heck out of my cornish cross chicks

Hi there Azygous Thanks for responding! I have twenty five of each breed with one rooster in each group, although which chick is actually the rooster is not apparent yet.

my little barred rock chicks beat the heck out of my cornish cross chicks

Hi all, I am new to BYC and this is my first post. We recently got some barred rocks and some Cornish crosses and at first kept them together. I was worried that the Cornish guys would wind up beating on my little barred rocks because they are already twice their size, but lo and behold, we go...
