    Crowing Rooster ..all night long

let me get this out there. his crowing does not bother us but we are concerned his crowing and early to roost behavior is stressing our what were otherwise good laying hens ( Buff Orps). before he matured there was no problems but now he is mature we are just wondering if that might not be an...

    Crowing Rooster ..all night long

the windows provide the warmth for winter and we leave them open for ventilation and cooling in the summer. To be truthful he's not worth that much effort & I seriously dont think we could plunge that coop intothat kind of darkness but I do appreciate your thoughts.

    Crowing Rooster ..all night long

no it's dusk to dawn..sunlight or lack there of triggers the light. I am in no control. Our old one we had control of and when we turned it off it plunged us into cave like darkness. My wife and I both have PTSD ( for different reasons) so blackout conditions is a non starter altho it would be...

Using Home Assistant as a Coop Light Timer

interesting counterpoint..more info needed for me. Electricity aint cheap either..need a cost to benefit study link #1: "You can increase the amount of light slowly to 16 hours per day late in the egg production cycle to help keep the flock in production. For most flock owners, this strategy...

Using Home Assistant as a Coop Light Timer

pretty much my thinking as well we have grown away from the "Pet" stage and therefore need to provide to justify their existence and food. I realize that may rub some wrong. We are going through the down time now and MIGHT get 1 egg out of 8 hens ( Buff Orps) every other or 3 days.. What I am...

What to feed hens to get deep orange yolks?

what a timely thread I was just going to ask the same question for the same reasons we can no longer free range our ladies except many here seem to just address the Color of the eggs not that actual richness that is associated with these Sunburst Orange yolks. We just use the standard 16% feed...

    odd eggs and yucky yolk

soo we have had one (we think it's only one) lay an odd egg from time to time in the last couple of weeks. All hens are Buffs,no rooster, no change in diet except the cicadas have been thick so they get one IF it flies into their run. Anyway the yolk is yucky and the shell is not smooth and...

Another mystery for the BC brain trust

The carcass has been disposed of and will be used to attract coyotes tonight. We are running with the FLHD and treats are done with and hope for the best. We are just poor farm people and it's not apriority to drop $$ into Hen Health care other than the basics. That being said we certainly...

Another mystery for the BC brain trust

tis one as was stated earlier couldn't walk and hardly stand the other's where just found in the morning dead. This is the only one that we had any warning. The FLHS certainly seems the most plausible and I Googled the symptoms and the wife said the livers where surrounded in fat..probably...
