Well, haven't been on this site for some time..... this theory did not prove too work so well. Out of 11 eggs, i ended up with 6 hens, the rest roosters. I'll try again this year if I can get an incubator.
I plan to keep some eggs from my layers to hatch . I have a buff orfington roo and a mix of other hens. mostly RI reds and a few Wyandottes. So I want to pas this tidbit on- someone told me that if you keep the eggs that are more rounded than pointy, you will have more hens than roosters...
I like the idea of using them in the garden, but in the past when I let them free range they often eat up or peck at my tomatoes. I'm thinking about making a smaller wire tractor to go between the rowsand put them in for a short period of time.. that may be worth a try.
I can't wait ...my new chix are being shipped on the 18th... I've never used Cackle before so it sounds like they are a good hatchery. I'll keep you up on what happens. I want the surprise too, but I thought I would first see how they handle my meat chix order. If they are healthy which...
Interesting info. I like the idea of the flour for tracks. I just lost my beautiful rooster, but I admit, I forgot to go put the chickens in that night. mine are free range all day long (live on a farm). I do have many predators and lately a lot of action in my horse barn at night where the...
hi- I use some shavings in the winter and also hay. I use shavings in the nesting boxes. makes for nice clean eggs.
The girls like the hay to scratch through it all and munch on it too. Now that spring is here, they only go in the coop to lay and roost at night and are free range all day long.
Been looking on this site for some time. I'm always looking for new, inexpensive ideas. I have 22 layers, of mixed breeds. Waiting on my meat chix. to arrive. next week! Have had chickens for about 7 years.
I've been looking for a differnt type of feeder. my girls just waste so much food out of the store bought round feeder. this might work!
working on a new movable pen for the meat birds I have coming, so that's the next project.
