While researching on the web, I have found a suggestion to use a 2X4 as a roost with the 3 1/2" side laying flat. And then while looking at some of the posted interior pictures of members coops I found some which appear to be just that. What is correct roosting design?

The lady I got my last chickens from caught them with a fish net and carried them by there ankles. The chickens became very still when placed upside down. She said this is the best way to carry a chicken. I was wondering if this was overly stressful to the bird?
Did you get a chance to look at the pics posted? Age is unknown, but they appear very large in size. Larger than our Road Island Red and Leghorn both by 1/2 again and there 16 months.
