Unfortunately, there is a big learning curve and a LOT OF RISK! I just lost my rooster because of the no crow collar. I followed the instructions to the letter and started loose, tightening it a few times over the course of a month or so until it was 'snug on my pinkie' as the instructions...
I just lost my rooster today. I have the exact same story as the person who started this thread, and so many others here as well. It IS the collar - it's not negligence. I work from home and I check on my chickens probably 5 or more times per day. I so wish I had known. I did research the...
Hmmm. That's good point about picking out what they like and leaving what they don't. It's partly crumble and part whole grain. I'll have to think about that.
She is adorable. Oh my gosh. She is so adventurous, curious, determined. Love her to pieces.
Thanks SO much for your...
She is with 3 other chicks - 2 are 5 weeks old, 1 is 3 weeks old. I'm keeping her and the other chicks in a 'puppy playpen' for a brooder in my house. I do provide chick grit - both in a separate bowl (that they cover with bedding in 5 seconds), and sprinkled like salt on their food.
I got...
Thanks so much for your reply. Here are some photos:
Here's my month-old sussex (actually about to be 6 weeks old :)). She's my #1 fan
Here is her regular watery poo:
Here is a watery cecal poo:
My month old sussex has had watery poo for a few weeks now. She is otherwise totally normal and seemingly healthy. She's eating, drinking, playing, flapping her wings. She's curious and adventurous - even a little hyper at times.
I have them on organic starter feed. Giving them herbs from...
I would also add Hops to the list of vining plants. I've read several places that it's not only safe, but the fruit (hops) is good for them. And, it can create shade for them as well.
Hi all,
I think my rooster has Fowl Pox (I'll post a photo later). I saw it two mornings ago and today I think I see signs on two hens. I'm hoping its dry pox.
Has anyone else in Denver had a problem with pox this year (or any time)?
Should I call CSU to talk to one of their vets?
Anyone...
Thanks for the reply. I also went ahead and got chickens - 7 hens and 1 rooster (accidentally). I also have lovely neighbors who gladly accept eggs and warn me about predators spotted in the area. Enjoy those cuties :)
I've read here and elsewhere that roosters actually help keep the peace when new chicks/chickens are added to the flock. He's a papa and he does seem to be quite protective of the girls. Even with me - the Big Mama. Well, I guess I'm a grandmama now :)
My black cochin (Ms. Penguin) went broody, so I decided to let her hatch some eggs (assorted eggs from most/all of the 6 hens that I have).
I was going to move her and the eggs to the 'maternity ward' (puppy play pen with next box on the floor of the chicken run) tonight as I thought I had...
I know the original post is very old, but . . . I've used milk paint extensively in my house, especially in my kitchen and it's held up amazingly well. I usually finish it with Tung Oil and then a hard wax - buffed. For the inside of my coop, I plan to use milk paint with a Safecoat Acriglaze...
