x2!
Don't give up on those eggs just yet! My last hatch, the power went down in the middle of the night and by the time I woke up, the thermometer was reading 76.4 degrees...I thought for sure that they were done. But I still got a 60% hatch rate and they were shipped eggs! I've heard...
I think that's part of what makes this soooo addicting! Even after hatching for a couple of years, I still get nervous with each batch. Just wait till "lockdown"...it gets very hard to sleep knowing they could hatch at any time!
It was a "hatching bug" that bit me while lurking on this site a couple of years back. Started off with A&M white coturnix quail...then hatched 3 batches of Orpington chickens...still hatching quail, only now I'm raising the Jumbo Brown coturnix. Good luck with your hatch and welcome to BYC!
I found the Rush Lane Poultry videos a couple of years ago and built one of his designs using an old plastic cooler with a GQF wafer thermostat and an old computer fan. It was inexpensive, simple to build and works great! I have only one regret...I should have installed two light bulbs in case...
Hope this may be of some help:
Lavender + Lavender = 100% Lavender
Black + Lavender = 100% Black split to Lavender (each chick will look black but carry one Lav gene)
Black + Black = 100% Black
Black + Splash = 100% Blue
Black + Blue = 50% Black / 50% Blue
Blue + Blue = 50% Blue...
I bought some DE recently and used some of it to dust my chihuahua's bed with. I keep a mealworm 'farm' near the dog's bed and the next morning most of my beetles had died! I didn't even place it directly on them, I was very careful to apply it only on the dog's bed. Maybe the dog shook some of...
Thanks Saskfarmgirl, I did more research yesterday on the bulbs I purchased. They are 'SLI Lighting' brand 250 watt infrared red heating lamp bulbs. The box says they are "Splatterproof! Hardened Pyrex glass designed not to shatter if contacted by liquids". They are safe and are not the...
I just ordered two new heat lamp bulbs a couple of days ago, but haven't received them yet...checked the product info online and they say they are "splatterproof" and are designed not to shatter when they come in to contact with liquids. Guess I'll be returning them . Thank you for posting this...
Thanks Dingo! Sorry about your quail, sounds like you were doing everything you possibly could to keep it going. As tiny as they are, seems quail would be much harder to raise than chickens.
And then there were 5!!! Thanks kellyn for your vote of confidence, I was not nearly so optimistic. Had to help the last two out of their shells....I was so nervous about doing that! They were both ready to come out though and one may have been in there too long. He's a little weak and keeps...
Thanks kellyn & Dingo! Sure hope your chicks pull through. Still waiting on the one pip, he seems to be making a little progress on his own. And I have a new pip! So you may be right, kellyn, if all goes well I may end up with 5! Course I know the chances of all of them making it are slim but...
Still running on no sleep...the egg that pipped over 6 hours ago still hasn't hatched and I'm beginning to wonder if it may need help. I can see it's beak and it's breathing normally with no signs of distress so I'll leave it be for now. My humidity must be ok cause the other three birds...
Wow! Congrats, sounds like you're doing great with your hatch! I've only got 3 Lav Orps so far and another pipping now...and I hope it hurries up cause my eyelids are slamming shut.
So far I have 2 chicks out and at least 2 more pipping! Had to take a little nap earlier and let my daughter keep an eye on the bator...knew I'd probably be up all night
