Here is poor Mildred earlier this Fall. Should have taken a video to capture her staggering around like a drunken sailor. Thanks to folks on this site whose posts reassured me she wasn’t dying!
Aart- Hard to imagine sweet quiet Violet as top of the flock but perhaps she was a quiet leader!
I have set the door to close later in the evening and will see if that makes a difference.
Ridgerunner- encouraging to hear yours sorted themselves out. I will be patient.
My coop is definitely...
Flock is a mix of 1, 2 & 3 year olds. “Problem” hens are 1 & 2 year olds. Once they are all inside there is definitely an issue with all wanting to be on the top roosting bar. After a week of me watching and scolding it seems to be getting a bit better.
I will try setting door to close later...
I have 11 chickens (used to have 12, story follows) with a 4x8 multi-rung coop and a 20x20 run. Coop has an auto door which is set to close around dusk, before it gets really dark. Set up has worked great for 3 years. A week ago I realized that 4 chickens were sleeping on a roosting bar under...
Agreed. New run will be 20x25 all hardware cloth which I hope will be fine for my now 12 birds? Hiring job out since I am a sixty year old lady and save my bad back back for all my gardening projects! So hard to find people to do random jobs. Guy has been saying he’d build it since the summer...
Ok thanks. Everyone is locked up in runs. When I have time later today I will clean up Bernadette and bring Penny and Amy inside for sleepover. Then i’ll bait my trap!
I had four 13-week old chickens living outside in a small coop/run adjacent to my main chicken run until ready to integrate into main flock. This morning I found one dead and another slightly injured and traumatized from what I think was a weasel. Brought injured bird inside as it is freezing...
I am encouraged that there is a chance they will remember her! I have a sweet small Orpington who is at the bottom of the pecking order (although she seems oblivious to her status and continues to try to run with the larger mean girls and consequently has a small bald spot on the top of her...
My sweet Brahma has been recovering from a raccoon attack indoors for several weeks. She has been on antibiotics, painkillers, eye drops and a steady diet of mealworms to get her to eat! She seems to finally be doing better although she is probably blind in one eye. Seems like she might be...
My nine-month old Brahma was injured in a raccoon attack two days ago which killed another bird. She has a gouge on one side of her neck which does not look too deep. I am treating that with Vetericyn Plus. Wound looks ok, although she is holding herself a little cockeyed so I think the whole...
Thanks for opinions everyone! Expanding secure run would involve some major land grading as area runs down a slope. Definitely something I may consider down the road, but don’t have time this year.
Lazy, nice to connect with another gardener. DH claims chicken coop was just an excuse to...
Hi! New chicken mama here. Thanks to this site for all the great information and for everyone who contributes for making my first eight weeks go so smoothly! Decided to register because I need advice.
I have a nice big coop (5x10)and a not-so-big (4x20) very secure run within a heavily...
