The Safe-Guard AQUASOL is not approved for laying hens; only broilers and breeding stock.

Wetting their food isn't a treat...😉 She asked about feeding frozen watermelon every hour to very young chickens.

    cooling off your chickens

I live in north central Texas south of Fort Worth with a flock of 75. As everyone has stated heat has been extreme this season with temps exceeding 100 for the last 2 weeks with high humidity. The humidity is unusual for us with the heat. My summer cooling routines are: 1. Jugs of ice in 5...

    cooling off your chickens

No, it is not for a couple reasons. Their water should be cool but not cold as it can be too big a shock to the system. It's the same reason we don't a/c or heat coops. In addition, if you are providing frozen TREATS on a continual basis, they aren't eating their feed which leads to inadequate...

Two hens stopped laying but act like they are! What's up?

Thanks for all the thought provoking questions. I too have had many go into box and not lay and/or leave and lay later but never for this extended amount of time. However, this upcoming molt will be my first and I didn't expect it would start this soon (hoped it wouldn't), especially since...

Two hens stopped laying but act like they are! What's up?

If it was all my hens, I could more easily attribute to weather, parasites, upcoming molt, etc. What's got me bugged is it's only 2 out of 29 and they were 2 of my best layers. 15 of my hens are 17 months old and the other 14 are only 10 months old.

Two hens stopped laying but act like they are! What's up?

Even if I'm not seeing any feather loss? I know molting is controlled by daylight hours but I add artificial light and temps in Texas are still summer like: mid-80's today, 90's yesterday. Everyone I've spoken with in the area is talking about how production is finally up after the drop in temps...

Two hens stopped laying but act like they are! What's up?

I do know for sure that they were laying. I monitor my laying hens closely for laying rate, egg size, and quality. I am confident they aren't egg bound. My next step was to take a fecal sample to vet for analysis but thought I would see issues with more than just 2 hens if it were internal...

Two hens stopped laying but act like they are! What's up?

Not broody. I'm dealing with those too. In addition, they don't attempt to get on nests that have eggs in them as broodies do. They still lay in their favorite nest boxes.

Two hens stopped laying but act like they are! What's up?

I have 29 hens of various breeds. A silver laced wyandotte and a RIR haven't laid an egg in several weeks; both are 17 months old. It's still summer-like here in Texas - as a matter of fact egg production has actually increased as we have finally gotten a break from the record highs this year...

Review by 'Hillbilly Texan' in article 'How to Keep Chickens Cool in the Summer'

I live in Texas and get frustrated sometimes with all the info out there regarding protecting our flocks from the cold. This is not my problem! Even when purchasing chickens, there's all kinds of info about how cold hardy a particular breed is but you oftentimes really have to research to find...

    Coyote Attack & Prolapsed Vent?

What is the off white/white discharge that continues from her vent? It dries like paste and very difficult to remove even after soaking.
