Guys, this is really helpful. My rooster was born last Spring and this is his first Winter. What you are describing makes sense about the molting because he is dropping feathers too. The wetness does seem so be on the base of his back right above the tail, and yes his feathers seem more slick...
Did you ever find out why they seemed wet? My rooster had the same case - the coop is very dry - and none of the other birds have a problem - they all look soft and dry. I thought he was getting condensation from being closest to the window, then I started thinking something was wrong. I am...
Oh my gosh, guys. I have been so scared all day because the past two days my rooster (but none of the girls) has had a greasy, "wet-looking" back and I thought at first that it got cold and damp in the coop and dew had condensed on his back and its been too cold to fully dry...then I started...
So helpful, thank you. I am using a kiddie pool temporarily, but i want something that looks a bit more permanent for them soon, as well as easy to get in and out. The challenge i am having is finding a wide shallow basin with a plug. And teh plugs i am finding (like on stock tanks) all empty...
Do you transfer them to a different area at night where you lock them up? That is kind of what i am doing. I lock mine up in my polebarn (workshoop) at night, but right now they are freeroaming during the day and by their little swimming pool. My idea is they will be in the barn at night, but i...
It helps greatly, Dan. I have the issue right now that i lay down dry straw in the corner on the concrete of my workshop floor, and they made a nice nest that they sleep in at night, but what happens with the ducklings, is they go crazy in their water drinker (even when suspended) and water gets...
Peggi,
Thanks! Did you ever finish the top? Did that work out well? I'd love to see how you protected from the top - i am still worried about hawks and climbing raccoons.
Ryan
Hattie I love what you did with your pool. Is it easy to clean this way? i imagine it has a drain below. can you easily drain it scrub it and refill it? How did you build up around it?
Ryan
Peggi,
Is your duck run freestanding or did you post it in the ground I want to give my freerange ducks a bit more protection like you did here, but make it versatile enough if i want to move it to a different part of the property.
Ryan
Dan, are the rubber stall mats easy to clean? do you just hose it all down? I am portioning off part of my cement-floor polebarn for the ducks at night (they are out in the day) but the straw gets yucky, but bare cement seems cruel. I would use these mats if it is nice for their feet and still...
I found another article! This girl had the EXACT same signs of predation:
http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/livestock-forums/poultry/357914-aerial-predator-identification.html
her duck was left alive but skinned on the neck and shoulders, very little blood. Just like mine!
Any ideas...
Hello,
This is a great article. I am still a little lost on our situation. We tragically lost one of our two pekin ducks last night. We came home just a bit too late - the sun had been down about an hour, we normally put them back in the enclosed barn by sundown. We are having a tough time...
Hi There everyone,
My name is Ryan I am in Grand Rapids, MI. I have been coming to this site for two years to get great information but just last month I took the plunge and my girlfriend and I got six baby chicks who are growing quite fast. I am looking forward to sharing and asking questions...
