Supid newbie questions time--I have 4 lorps and all four are featherless on the front of their chests--but you can't tell unless you part the over feathers. Is this normal? No signs of parasites or red, inflamed skin.

Here we are 7 months later and they all sleep in the nesting boxes...no matter what I try. *rolls eyes*

Thanks for the kind words! I do love those silly birds.... No it isn't any fun cleaning out the boxes every day. Hopefully I can get them turned around. Other than their weird sleeping habits, I have no complaints--BAs are just a terrific breed. And such great layers-I'm still getting 2-3 eggs a...

Hmmmm my roost is turned to the 4'' part, but it is about the same height as the nesting box...that may be the issue. I like the idea of a door. I think I'll try it. thanks! I have SOOO many pictures. My camera used to be filled with cat pics and now it is filled with chicken pics. Yep. I'm...

I have two that roost beautifully in the coop on a 2'x4' set on it's side. The coop is a small urban coop that is 4'x4' and snug with nesting boxes off the main coop.But...

I started using leg bands to tell my four apart and the grew out of them--I felt pretty bad to see marks on their fat little legs where the bands dug in!! Where do you get yours? My feedstore only sells smallers sizes and my girls are large and in charge!

My roost is on the side too--same thought about them covering their feet in winter. I'm glad they are so hearty, I'm already feeling the pangs of leaving them out in the cold. Everyone assures me that BA are fine in the cold so *I'm* the one who will have to be strong! lol!

    Australorps breed Thread

I hear you all about stand offish Australorps--That's me too! My lorps just get close enough to grab the food. I've gotten them to jump in my lap for treats--but once the treats are gone they are gone too. They do follow me around the yard though and they come when I call--such sweet birds. I...

    How do your chickens sleep?

I have four Australorps and their roost is a 2x4 with the flat side up. Three of the chickens just stand awkwardly on the roost and the fourth sleeps in the bedding in the corner. I would really like to see them hunker down over their feet since it is starting to get cold...but it seems like...

How to Get Urban Chickens in Columbus, Ohio

There has been a HUGE upsurge in Columbus folks wanting birds--City Folks Farm shop and Local Matters have been having successfully attended classes. So either there is a slew of people going the renegade route or it has gotten easier to get a permit. I'm not sure. I'm going to apply again after...
