New to chickens - already built coop - tell me what's wrong (or right) - Florida

Thanks Aart! I should have considered the open door situation. Makes perfect sense. Particularly since I'll be locating the food/supplies (in appropriate containers) along that wall. I'll add that to the list for an apron. For the right side maybe we'll just trench down a good length of...

New to chickens - already built coop - tell me what's wrong (or right) - Florida

As an update on our coop we have finished all the hardware cloth installation that included covering the gaps at the top where the wood meets the roof. We also added a double set of latches to the coop door and hinges and latches on the outside nesting boxes. We're about to add a chicken run...

Who is this mystery chick with feathered feet?

Great, thanks! I make at least a dozen (or several dozen) new discoveries every day with these little cuties.

Who is this mystery chick with feathered feet?

Thanks. This has been fun so far. It's kinda funny that I specifically eliminated any feathered footed friends when I was selecting the order. Not for any good reason other than the possible "ick" factor in my mind when thinking about fuzzy feet and poop. But I've got to say she has won my...

Who is this mystery chick with feathered feet?

Interesting. I was guessing Partridge Cochin as well but that was after being so confused by the colors on Brahmas. Either way, she's quite the independent one and isn't bothered a bit by being the only one of her kind in the 8 chick flock. It'll be interesting to see her grow.

Who is this mystery chick with feathered feet?

Hi - I have an interesting looking one week old mystery chick that came from Meyer Hatchery. It is one of the two "assorted rare" from Meyer Hatchery. Per their website: Possible breeds include: Ancona, Andalusian, Wyandotte, Delaware, Dominique, Jersey Giant, Brahma, Partridge Rock, Light...

    PEEING ON CHICKENS

Ah, thanks about the vinegar. I'll try that to get him discouraged. As to how they will react. Unfortunately I am already guessing (decided) towards the negative. One has a high squirrel kill count and the two of them together have killed two feral cats. So I'm pretty sure their prey drive...

    PEEING ON CHICKENS

OK, this is rather funny. Until this morning we didn't even have any chickens (like ever) yet. We have been fixing up the already existing open air coop on the property we bought in Florida. But one of our dogs has been peeing on the sides of the coop and because it's open air it gets in. So...

Help - Injury? Matting? - Brand new chick

Thanks Wyorp Rock. Yes, I have GroGel. Two packets in fact because I added one to the order before I realized Meyers adds one to every order. All have been gobbling up the one packet I gave them. And they are eating, drinking, pooping machines! I did try to wash the wing a bit (and dry of...

Help - Injury? Matting? - Brand new chick

Hi, Absolute newbie here. This morning I picked up chicks from Meyer Hatchery from the post office. One died in transit (got squished by the cardboard) and I suspect there was some pecking amongst the others (8 still alive). However, one of the chicks has one whole side matted down. Being so...

New to chickens - already built coop - tell me what's wrong (or right) - Florida

Thanks Scissors65 and Malamute1: Yes - stormy weather aplenty here. Yesterday we were just thinking about attaching tarps to eves that could be rolled down depending on how the rain was hitting. Based on the structure it should be easy enough. And excellent point about velcro strrips on the...

New to chickens - already built coop - tell me what's wrong (or right) - Florida

Thanks for such a thoughtful reply. Again, I fear I missed thinking about mosquitoes. I should have. They get me at sundown plenty enough. We literally just finished attaching the hardware cloth fully on the outside of the coop this weekend and now I wish I had thought of sandwiching finer...

Yes, this forum is phenomenal. Everyone is just so great. I see so many posts from folks with chickens in distress and there's always many BYC community members right there to help out as much as they can from afar. I've never seen a more supportive online community. BYC humans and their...
