Good to hear they are looking close! I thought they still looked pink in the face compared to photos I was looking at online. They are going to be confined to their coop and run for a few days now anyway, as we've spotted Mr Fox hanging about in the day time, so fingers crossed that might help...
What a pretty girl she is! I think I've fallen a little in love with pekins. How lucky to get your first egg within a week! It's great to hear that you think they look almost ready - I was just worried as a novice I'd overlooked something. Thanks so much 🙂
Hi everyone. I've been wondering about my 3 pekin bantam girls for some time. I got them as day old chicks at the end of March, so they are now 8 months old. When googling around, it seems you can expect pekins to start laying between 6 and 8 months of age. They're obviously now at the later end...
Hello :) These are my 4 week old cochins/pekins. I'm sure I won't know for sure for a couple more weeks but would love some gender guesses from more educated people :) I'll just upload 2 images per bird but I have a million more if needed.
Chick 1 - Lavender/grey (photos 1 and 2)
Chick 2 - Pale...
Hi Everyone! These guys have just turned 4 weeks old. I know it's still too early to know for sure but would love to hear some guesses. I'm thinking chick 1 and 2 are pullets, 3 must be a roo. Chicks 4 and 5 have had me guessing a bit more but I'm leaning probably both roos?
Chick 4's wattles...
Yep that's an awful lot of comb and wattle! Such a pity. We held on to a chick that turned out to be a cockerel some time ago - if you aren't allowed roosters due to noise Id say hold on to him until he starts to crow as ours turned out to be pretty quiet and only sounded off a handful of times...
Hi there. I'm in a similar situation - I got three chicks in mid March which are now out in my coop and then got 5 more which will be ready to join them in a month or so. The advice I got was that it will very much depend how many of your 5 buff orpingtons are roos, and if there are any roos...
no problem at all! thanks for the tip with the feathers. I'm pretty convinced the serama is a little roo but if it turns out he isn't that would be a lovely surprise :D
Thanks so much for replying! We certainly wouldn't be looking to keep them all long term. It would just be in the interim between the new chicks (and any cockerels amongst them) being ready to go out in the coop with the older chicks, and the time it would take to rehome the roosters. I thought...
Oh thank you for confirming colours! Pekins seem to come in so many varieties I didn't have a clue what they were. I think the pekin cockerel is going to be very handsome so keeping everything crossed that he isn't the loudest so we can hold on to him :)
Hi everyone,
Quick question. 6 weeks ago we hatched 2 pekin bantams and 1 serama bantam. Of these I ended up with two cockerels and one pullet. We've now just acquired 5 more day-old pekin bantam chicks, genders unknown for a few more weeks. When they hit the 6/7 week mark i'll be looking to...
Thanks everyone! I have just ended up with another 5 day old pekin chicks (a breeder near us is struggling to get rid of them in lockdown and we have plenty of space) so will probably be hassling you all for more gender guesses in a few weeks time :D
Hi everyone - these guys are now just over 6 weeks old. I think it's pretty clear the black pekin and serama are roos, but leaning towards pullet for the white pekin, unless it's a very late developing boy. Still doesn't seem to have much comb or wattle growth - do other people agree?
