Ok, likin' this chicken name thread! My welsummer roos are named: Rastus (I taka care of de hens mon...) very colorful guy... Frustrated!!!!!!!!

Just how big an area do your chickens have to run in? A flock that size needs a good size coop and hen yard as crowded chickens are likely to peck at each other a lot.I'm thinking they are aggressive because of being too crowded. They need space for the ones at the bottom of the pecking...

now what??????????????day 21 no hatch OR DAY 27

I also have a still air incubator and it didn't have a thermometer or hygrometer. I am guessing at the humidity and use a meat thermometer stuck through the side (at egg level) to see where the temps are. Thanks for the tip on the petshop reptile thermo/hydrometer. Will definitely buy one before...

    So what's for breakfast?

Easy Egg Breakfast Casserole! Here's the recipe. It is super easy, you can make it ahead and then just pop it in the oven until it sets up (20-30 min depending on how deep it is in the pan). frozen hash browns (diced or shredded) 6 eggs (for a 9x9 pan) or 9-12 eggs( for a 9x13 or larger pan)...

now what??????????????day 21 no hatch OR DAY 27

I just checked my eggs...no sound, no wiggle. I know the humidity is good as I have condensation on the inside of the incubator. The temp is 104 so I turned it down. Keeping the temp correct has been the hardest part. I varies too much no matter how I adjust it. If these don't hatch, I'm using...

now what??????????????day 21 no hatch OR DAY 27

Quote: most folk throw at day 25 - but because I had a late hatch success I give it longer. IF your temp has been on the low side it can delay hatch if your humidity is a bit on the high side it can cause shrink wrap. Be patient you can also try the water test. Oesdog - What is the water test?

now what??????????????day 21 no hatch OR DAY 27

I've also had a delayed hatch. Mine were supposed to start hatching March 31 and April 1. Not one peep out of any of them. I candled all the eggs and there was chick growth so I know I had live peeps at least up to March 25. My temps fluctuated between 96 and 103 degrees so I hope this didn't...

How do you deal with a very "I"M A ROO

Out of my 4 roosters I have one aggressive Welsummer. He was an adult when I got him but, had not been within a flock to get socialized. BIG MISTAKE. Wellies are not known to be aggressive to people so know his behavior is due to being separated from other chickens. Rastus became aggressive...

    Muddy Coop Club

My hen yard is looking more like a pig yard with all the mud. Our area of Virginia has had a lot of rain (we needed it) and with all the rain we got a LOT of mud. The Speckled Sussex hens will walk right through the puddles and keep on scratching while, my Welsummer girls prefer to walk around...

    How many chickens

    Ok I will add to your 4 chickens: 1 Mutt hen ( Huzzy) 10 Welsummers (2 roos, 8 hens) 9 Speckled Sussex (2 roos, 7 hens) Your 4 + My 20 = 24 chickens:D

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I have 8 Welsummer hens and 2 roos. My girls laid between 4 to 7 eggs a day throughout the winter as I put a heat lamp in the coup. Now, they have cut back to only 2 or 3 a day. I'm wondering if this is because I forced them to lay by tricking them with the light? Now that Spring is here, we...

Two Sets of Chicks... How to Integrate?

I've had pretty good luck with adding new birds at night after mine have roosted. They wake up the next day with the new chickens and I've had minimal pecking as they think they've always been together. You might try this sneak-them-in-the-flock trick with your chicks. If it doesn't work then...

Hi Folks, My hubby and I live in Rockingham County, VA. We are working on becoming a productive homestead. We started raising Welsummer chickens last year and just acquired a flock of Speckled Sussex chickens. We now have 16 lovely chicken ladies running all over the hen yard and 4 roosters (2...
