What did you do in the garden today?

Surprisingly delighted to see this thread! I was out there for hours (here and there in between zoom mtgs) but feel so accomplished! Have been frustrated by this slanted bed since we bought the house, always thought ‘gotta fix that’.. then a big storm this spring made tree fall on it so yay...

Lavender Orpington x Brown-Red Easter Egger

How fun! Our ladies turned out black from the dominance but eggs are great because they’re strong shelled but not too thick like full maran. I’ll find a few pics here but be aware we have a mixed flock so will take some detective work to ‘weed out’ the Ameracauna/Maran in the yard too. But yes...

Lavender Orpington x Brown-Red Easter Egger

For the purists out there.. this roo is a black copper maran not an Easter egger, but he just passed away 5 days ago so I guess part of the reason I wanted to reply to this post was to show him off. Best bird we’ve ever had. He’s passed on his beautiful coloring with 3 diff. batches of chicks...

Lavender Orpington x Brown-Red Easter Egger

This cross wasn’t intentional (lol) and I was concerned chicks would have weird plumage but nope! They were darling chicks and now they’re beautiful.. solid black birds.. just like @JacinLarkwell predicted. Mom’s name is Pickles so we call this batch of babies “the gherkins” .

Lone Elderly Chicken -- Advice Needed

Thanks, all, for this thread. Momma Hen has been so wonderful to all our chicks through the years. Often even more maternal than their own mothers. Now the flock has grown substantially and she was getting bullied/aggressively mounted. We brought her in to our mud room just for some peace, but...

What age can they free range safely?

I agree with @Chickenma2021 that 8 weeks is good timing, Today was my first day letting our 9 week babies out into the ‘open’.. still fenced but out from their chicken wire roofed playpen. They’ve been out there for about 10 days to ease integration with rest of flock.. “see but no touch...

Long time peeper, first time poster

No problem! Thanks for the interest! The guy who did it admitted “uhhh... I’ve never done a chicken before but ... sure?” 😂 There are definitely things that could’ve been done better but we love it and that’s why he sits up high can’t see the mounting block etc 🤷‍♀️ thanks again - I know it’s...

Hello BYC community! Have used this resource for years and today felt like the right day to finally sign up! Our journey with chicks has been a long and wonderful one. Would take too long to mention all the highs and lows but just wanted to offer that I’m here for continued learning from the...
