    Attaching Hardware Cloth to Run

Zip ties, here - I used some metal ones and some heavy duty plastic. They are working great so far. I used garden stakes to secure the hardware cloth skirting to the ground.

    Dust Bath

Alaska here, too! I'm using sand, ash, and peat moss in a tire - my run is covered so I'm not super concerned about it getting wet and freezing beyond them constantly flipping pooping in there.

12 week old Orpington - gender?

This is Bubby...and s/he is a Black Mottled Orpington. The comb on this bird got pink before my 4 other Orps of the same age but then stopped. I have 2 cockerels and 2 pullets that are unmistakable and then this one. I can't tell if poor Bubby is a later blooming cockerel or an early blooming...

    Young'ns not going into coop

UPDATE: After 5 days of lockdown, the chickens are going into ONE coop at bedtime...they are apparently boycotting the larger, nicer coop. They are also not on roosting bars and staying in a chicken huddle on the floor...but at least they made it inside!

    Young'ns not going into coop

Yes, lights are on during the day to make it more inviting as the coops are pretty dark. The vent shown in the one is small but has others that can't be seen, as well as in the other light blue one. Ventilation is SUPER important here because humidity will cause frostbite in the cold much...

    Young'ns not going into coop

They have completed 3 days of lockdown, plus about 3 hours. These are the coops - only up on cinder blocks so not high. The dark blue coop DOES have a ramp that isn't pictured, with rungs about every 6 inches. Prior to lockdown, they would venture up the ramp but not actually enter the coop. No...

    Young'ns not going into coop

Yes? We're currently losing almost 7 minutes of daylight every day and that will increase as we get more into the cool weather, to the point where it will be dark before I even get to leave work at 5pm. By the time dark coincides with bedtime, it should be well below freezing but not to the...

    Young'ns not going into coop

The older chicks are happy with the younger ones and they're too smart to go in being lured by treats. I've tried. 😭 For their first several days outside I was catching them with a helper and LOTS of running - and then letting them out in the run during the day and they didn't get the picture...

    Young'ns not going into coop

I am a new proud chicken mama in the frozen north - winter temps drop to a low of around -40F and average around -20 or so. I have 15 chicks currently, waiting to thin out once I find who is a hen vs roo. I have 5 ten weekers and 10 7 weekers. We have "the compound" for our chickens and have...
