Had a jersey giant hen die last year. Did sum mor reserch (byc) and found out that they don't do well in the heat and hi humidity down here. Sooo I'm tryin agin but with a different setup. More shade to go with the air flow and added a pan of water in the shade for wading. They all have been in...

I have an 8 yr old porcelain d'uccle that has just stopped laying and a 2 yr old that has never laid. Both are in the grow up pen as surrogate mom's to the new babies I've added. The silkie duccle hen has had them under wings on occasion 🙂

In your flock, what is the average lifespan of your hens?

I'm focused on making sure my birds have plenty of shade and water with good air flow but have noticed they have stopped laying. They are not molting.

Do hens stop laying if it gets too hot?I'm talking upper 90s with heat index of 103 and higher.

    Curious- jersey giant quail hybrid.

Maybe a quail rooster an a jersey hen. Small jersey hen. Very small. Don't know if they get that small. How big is a quail rooster?

    Curious- jersey giant quail hybrid.

I've read that quail and chikens can cross. Wonder what a jersey giant quail hybrid would look like?

Wish I could let mine free range. But too many hawks, eagles, coons, possums an snakes. To name a few.

    Hi. New to byc

If it wasn't for Peanut (my dog) I wouldn't have gotten my reds. Lol. She caught 2 of my neighbors free range hens when they got in my pasture and brought em home. Not a scratch on em. She thought somehow that they were mine( had none at the time) and they had gotten out( no pen- just a barn)...

    Hi. New to byc

I think hubby's rooster doesn't know when he's NOT supost to crow. I went to feed my horses the other morning. Still dark. Hubby is asleep. Not a peep from the coop. I said good morning mr.rooster. Shoulda kept my mouth shut.

An article that I found helpful to keep hawks away.

I've seen the Mockingbirds sitting on the top of my chicken coop liked they owned it. I kinda spill the feed when taking it to the coop. It doesn't go to waste lol

I noticed that Mockingbirds will chase the hawks away or try to so I like to give the ones that stay around my chicken coop a treat sometimes for helping chase the hawks away. Got to watch them do it a couple of times. Lol.
