Go for it...I just wanted to see if other people had a similar exp with DE as I did...we can help save a lot wasted time/money and help keep insect populations better controlled
Okay Chicken Peeps,
If your like me and try chickening from an organic or sustainable approach you have probably come along Diatomaceous Earth and its suggestions for use in and around the coop for controlling various insect populations.
I pride myself on running a clean coop and just...
I found it on Amazon (shocker right?):) and they have various sizes depending on your needs and applications....since I also use it in the garden I went with the larger. size....another nice feature is you can use it indoors and around pets and food...also my birds showed no signs of...
I see some new feathers trying to coming in but will reevaluate after third and final treatment...I may be bathing them as I still see redness around a few of their vents...coop and run seem clean but as mentioned by others there are microscopic mites I may be missing plus given my eye sight...
Thanks for all the great replies and since I'm coming at this from more of a horticulture background here's a tip from that side of the spectrum...its more costly than a spray bottle but it lasts for years.... if you flush it with fresh water after every use. They run around a 100.00 but the...
HAVE R.I.R and THE JERSEYS ARE BY FAR SO MUCH SWEETER...THEY HAVE PERSONALITY!!!
I have a mix of the RIR and Jersey Giants and the Giants are so much friendlier...easy to handle...come when I'm around the coop...let me treat them when they need treated...My first time with chickens...I'm sold...
Update...I went to use the Permethrin for my first application but it was also mixed with insecticidal soap, so I went with the IC3 for first application and then went off to the feedstore for the Permethrin for the second application...I had used it (IC3) before but not with the mineral oil as...
Another valid option... Neem Oil and I've also seen Spinosdad used although the Spinosdad has not proven itself so well in my garden trials .like the Neem, Permethrin and IC3 have. I guess there should be another thread of which I'm sure there is: DE waste of time or worth the effort?
I've used...
I'd been using the IC3 without mixing it with the mineral oil which is what they suggest for poultry infestations...for those of you not familiar it is a concentrate of rosemary oil, geraoil, peppermint oil and probably has as fast if not a faster knock down then permethrin works great on all...

This will be my first year raising birds end of this month and after first defeating an outbreak of dry fowl pox mother nature as decided to test my resolve yet again with a mite infestation and we have had over a foot of rain in the last three weeks (Jax, FL)

Well I'm happy to say ALL the girls came through with flying colors, no real drop in egg production or behavioral changes...kept up with the cleaning, changing out bedding, and iodine in the water plus some VetRx and they did great! None the less I will vaccinate all my future birds as here in...
I'm using iodine in the water, wondering if you can add the probiotics to that or vitamin supplements along with the iodine? Their still laying well so I'm crossing my fingers
Sorry for the delay...Holidays and extra time consuming biosecurity measures already tripling my busy schedule. Here's a pic and if you notice the bottom of the waffle you can see the black crusty tip. This is the worst of my girls and I'm hoping it doesn't get too more advanced. My take is if...
