    Early hatch, yolk sac unabsorbed

Hey guys, I have a blue copper marans chick that made it to 21 days, hatched on its own early this morning, but the yolk sac is not fully absorbed. The other chicks have been moved to the brooder so this one has the incubator to itself. Just give it time? Leave it in the incubator (adjust any...

    Feeding the flock for free

Want to get creative here and find sustainable, low-to-no cost ways to feed our chickens without commercial grain products. What ideas do you have? 😃 I have several large flocks of chickens, 130+ total. I usually alternate which flock free ranges daily so they can forage for additional food...

    Raising Spanish black turkeys?

Thank you! She’s got eight eggs in the nest now (set up a board for her to nest behind and she liked it). Do they like to get to a certain number of eggs before sitting on them? My incubator is full and I had a bad experience trying to hatch some turkey eggs under my hens last year so I’m hoping...

    Unabsorbed yolk

Oh, and I have been watching the hen and other chicks. The hen has been very careful of it. She seems to realize it's not ready to run around yet and is staying still in the brooder box. I can/will remove the chick if necessary.

    Unabsorbed yolk

Okay, thank you. I have left it alone hoping not to cause complications. I do worry that it isn't eating though as it doesn't weigh what I expect when I pick it up. It seems somewhat lethargic and weak compared to the others and just hides under the broody hen (who hatched it along with a few...

    Unabsorbed yolk

This is the first time this has hapened to us but we have a tiny chick that seems to have hatched early and didn't fully absorb the egg yolk. When I found it it was just coming out of the shell so I stuck it kind of back in the bottom half of the shell and left it there. It absorbed a good bit...

Curious about colors and genders in New Hampshire Red Chicks

I said I wondered if they were breeding for egg production, but I do not know that they are breeding or selecting for any specific qualities or attempting to make any changes to the line. We also have other breeds that we rely on for egg production and hope to select from the New Hampshire’s...

Curious about colors and genders in New Hampshire Red Chicks

Yea Yeah I was surpised. If they hadn't also reached butchering weight so quickly I would have been concerned that they were now breeding for earlier egg production instead, but they have done well in both regards. I believe about a handful of the 14 hens I have are laying. Interestingly, they...

    Raising Spanish black turkeys?

I’d love to hear about anyone’s experience raising Spanish black turkeys. Some friends gave us a pair when they had to move. Might have some bronze mixed in. We’re hoping for some eggs this spring. Any tips on creating a nesting area they will like? Should we expect this breed to go broody? And...

Curious about colors and genders in New Hampshire Red Chicks

Thanks for sharing. These birds are about five months old now and doing excellent. Roosters reached butchering weight quickly and we harvested the extras. Largest one was over eight pounds when cleaned. The hens are beginning to lay now and loving their pasture rotation system. I am also not...

Curious about colors and genders in New Hampshire Red Chicks

Our first meat chickens are here! We have 22 New Hampshire Reds from Freedom Ranger Hatchery (Henry Knoll line). Lost just a few to travel stress, it took them an extra day to get here, everyone is doing good now. Made it through our first frost last night too (inside with a heat lamp of...
