I am totally looking forward to speaking to and hopefully meeting Johanna. I will be kind of close in her area July 6th and would love to be able to take home a couple hens then if it's possible!
I went out this morning to double check Mörgæs' toes and he only has 4, I have a photo too that I...
@Icies
Digging through this Icelandic Chickens thread.. the first photos I posted of my 4 in here was on May 27th. So the first photos here were of them at about 4 weeks and 3 days old or so (one was 4 weeks + 2 days the rest were +3)!
I did originally post some photos in the baby chick picture...
@NotAFarm
You were right with my grey chick!! It started making this rather crazy sound two days ago, and this morning I caught him in the act and managed to film it! I am assuming "he" is now practicing to crow. Is that about normal age for a possible crowing sound?
My youngest out of the...
@NotAFarm
Thank you for the explanation! I understand a bit better now, I just never knew there were different comb types! I guess that comes with being a beginner! :)
I just also have to add that your flock is beautiful!
That is one thing I do love about the Íslenskas, they are just a huge...

From what I thought.. 1st and 3rd were roosters since they have the huge combs, but my husband told me not to be certain with it! (note: never had chickens before in my life haha, so I don't know much of anything)
It seems like number 3 had all the development first so far comb and...
A small update here:
I found out that my 4 Icelandic chicks ended up being slightly younger than I originally mentioned. Instead of their April 21st and 22nd hatchdates, their hatchdates are the 25th and 26th of April. It's my fault for miscounting haha. Oh well!
They are doing well and I moved...
Hi mechanic57!
I am still very new to the whole chicken scene here in Iceland but it seems to be an easy ordeal for most of the Icelanders to be having them.
I know of a handful of people in my area (I live in the south- near Mt. Hekla area) that are raising chickens. Maybe I am over thinking...
Thanks for the reply!
I noticed out of the four I have, this is the only one with the curve!
At least I now know it isn't exactly anything to worry about, and not to breed Ljómi (even though that's a shame losing that lineage). :)
I know there are a lot of old toe posts floating around in BYC.. but here I am!
I noticed one of my babies (born on April 22) that I brought home May 5th not only has bigger, longer feet than it's siblings but also has a bit of a curved toe thing going on ( it last one hatched by the way).
It...
Thank you for the welcome!
Not corny whatsoever!
Well there are other types of chickens here in Iceland, but the Icelandic ones are most common and of course most of the population.
To me I love the Icelandic Chickens, out of the variety I could have. They are fun and they are beautiful, and I...
Oh my goodness, I didn't even notice there was a thread just for Icelandic Chickens until I was googling a minute ago and they had the link on the wiki page for Icelandic Chickens!!
I joined BYC a few days ago because I am a first timer, who happens to live in Iceland.. and owns Icelandic...
Gosh! I never knew they grew and changed so fast. If only you saw what they were like last week when we brought them home! They will be hitting 3 weeks old on Friday!
I posted a photo or two of two of them when I first joined, but here are all for as of last night!!
Introducing my Icelandic...
I ended up making a makeshift sort of lid for now and of course left the lamp, I also decided to leave them where they were (which is in my bedroom and probably one of the warmest rooms of the house).
I think it might be time for me to find them a bigger living area!!
Penguin (my daughter's "baby") has figured out how to fly up to the top of the box and "perch" on the edge.
The box is a big storage bin that I bought at a department store for home furnishings, and has no sort of lid.
Do you...
