    Tremor in growth restricted chicken

Yeah that’s what I’ve been doing, feeding her moistened chick grower mash and water with electrolytes and vitamins in it. She’s been much better last night and today, running around my house and looking out the window. You can see in the photo she’s still puffy but much less so. The tremor...

    Tremor in growth restricted chicken

I have a nine week old chick (Easter egger) who hatched smaller and slower than the other chicks. She is now about half of their size and for the last few days I’ve had her quarantined inside because she’s been fluffing out her feathers and I noticed she is weaker than usual. Those were her...

    RIP chicken thread

We said goodbye to our beautiful, hilarious, curious, bold @$&hole rooster today and I’m really choked up. He was a great flock protector and alarm clock, who used to eat out of our hands. As he got older he started attacking the other chickens and then our kiddo. We tried to rehabilitate his...

Cool idea! I have some old window panels that would work great for this, and a big bag of oats but haven’t wanted to over feed them oats. Will try this!! Thank you.

    Nesting boxes in run?

the run is completely enclosed, with extra wire dug down into the ground. They don’t free range yet as we have a lot of hawks and some of the pullets are still quite small. I’ll keep them enclosed til I see they’re all laying well in the coop nest boxes. Thanks for this.

    Nesting boxes in run?

Hi folks. Does anyone keep nesting boxes in your run instead of/as well as in the coop? First time chicken keeper over here. My girls are pecking around their 20 x 40 yard from sunup to sundown, with no preference for being in the coop at all. I’m wondering if from spring to fall they might...

Should i vaccinate my 5 month old birds for Mareks?

Hoosierhens101, did you end up vaccinating your older chickens? I’ve lost 3 chickens in my unvaccinated flock, to what appears to be mareks. I’m wondering if the vaccine might help, since it sounds like it can’t hurt. My birds are all 4 months old.

    Broody pullet?

Yes, here (Ontario, Canada) it costs $250 for an autopsy. My vet advises to freeze just in case we change our minds because a frozen bird, while not ideal, can still be tested. We have lost another bird, that’s three now. So marek's seems very likely. It’s so heartbreaking.

    Broody pullet?

The first bird is still in my freezer on the advice of my vet. The problem is that we’re in Canada so testing/ autopsy is super expensive. Upwards of $200 for an autopsy and $160 to test blood/feather tips. If it’s marek’s, we will know soon enough? And there’s nothing we can do anyways.

    Broody pullet?

She was always smaller than the other birds and wasn’t growing. But she could eat with the biggest roo. Do you know if marek’s causes this kind of wasting? Or maybe it could just make her more susceptible.

    Broody pullet?

We lost her last night. We are so sad, she was the sweetest and cuddliest little chicken. Now we’re bracing for more illness. Our vet says marek's is endemic to the wild bird population here. Researching supplementation to support the bigger/older/healthier birds.

    Broody pullet?

She’s eating and drinking, and her droppings look totally normal. She’s half the size of the other pullets who are around the same age (but different breeds), and she’s growing extremely slowly. We’ve separated her out from the rest of the chickens in case she’s sick. Currently giving her...

    Broody pullet?

She can walk just fine. She tends to hang back from the others, but will occasionally cuddle them. She’s not as active as other chickens but she doesn’t seem to have any mobility or coordination issues, she is just smaller and has a quieter temperament.
