9 degrees [Fahrenheit] here last night! Ugh!! Oh well, at least the coop is nice and warm. No more brooder lamps, hooray!
Well....except for the baby chickies (which are doing great and made it through a snow storm without power for two days...with only hot water bottles...); and they are all...
That's great!
I won't lie...I had several moments with this roo before we came to terms. He tried to talon me a few times when he was younger, but we had it out with the rake-waving (actually, I think I had a shovel..).. and now we have an understanding.
Still, I won't turn my back on him...
They are so beautiful! I love that golden red color! They look warm, too!! Ours are going to need that warm red light for several months still....it is officially COLD here in the north. And our hens have no interest in sitting on nests. They just want to be out...all the time. I figured; we...
:D Yup! Those are my Barred Rocks! Nothing fancy, but the hens are great layers and the cockerels get to be a decent size.
That rooster came as a "packing peanut" with a bunch of ducks I ordered. Kept that one because I liked his shape and attitude. He isn't too tough (to challenge me), but...
So cool!
We have roughly 37 birds.....not counting these new ones... and I have to, um...get rid of a few, or eat some...before I am "allowed" to hatch any more.
I would love to hatch some silkies or seramas or something really cute like that, but I am afraid our rough winters would be too...
PICTURE TIME!
Here they are! Well, most of them.... it's hard to keep track of who's who, but you get the idea...
One Barred Rock.
One Barred Rock X Buff Orpington [front] BR X Speckled Sussex (I think) [back]
And don't worry. I had the heat cranked up [because we were all cold]...I...
I have chipped back the shell, keeping inner membrane intact. No movement at all.
If opening the lid affected any of them, it was this one. Seems like the eggtooth got stuck in the pip area. Then the membrane dried out.
I'll give the float test to the other egg...but I think I'm calling it at...
Thanks, sumi!
Considering (and I didn't mention this before because I could literally HEAR the heads shaking from hundreds of experienced chicken hatchers...I was embarrassed...), all I used was the thermometer that came with the kit! Talk about beginners luck!
I followed the directions from...
Still no pics yet...still drying. And my camera isn't good enough to take a low light pic, not one that will do them justice, anyway. AND, let me be the first to say....they are not the cutest chickens I have ever seen! Faces only a mother could love!
Actually, it is super hard not to fall in...
Just got back...the bleeding seems to have stopped, so, yeah! Also, another chick arrived while I was gone!
Here are the stats:
I set 10 eggs.
Of the 10, 9 have pipped, and 4 of those have hatched completely...
Lots of activity still going on. Sitting tight now, just waiting for more to...
Another hatched as I was on my way out....And it has already detached itself from the shell. It looks like it is bleeding a little from the cord. Should I be concerned?
...another just hatched as I'm typing this! It's like dominoes!! This is SO cool!
Also, so cool on your chick, Sumi...
They sound like nice chicks! Mine are mutts too...Well, except for the one egg I got right from my BR. So, at least one BR. Hatchery stock, though different lines. My hens have been great layers and my roo is nice and meaty, so I'm hoping the chicks will be good dual purpose too.
As for the...
