Everyone in Innisfil hoping to raise chickens needs to call up their ward councillors and write the Town emails and tell them you want to be able to raise a few hens in settlement areas. If enough people complain, they will consider amending the by-law. You can't even raise a pet rabbit there...
I've raised alot of hatchery birds in my life but I hadn't seen so many reproductive issues (egg binding, thin shells, shelless eggs etc.) until I raised red sex link hens. I'm wondering if others are seeing the same?
Does the breed matter at all, for instance do high production sex links get these illnesses on average more than a hatchery bared rock?
Or is it fairly even across breeds and mostly due to poor genetic variety of hatchery birds?
For those of you who have high production hen breeds who have succumbed to conditions related to reproduction disorders prematurely (2+ yesrs) did you obtain these birds as pullets or chicks?
Just wondering if there is any difference in the rates of contracting these disorders and diseases...
