It was -15 degrees when I got up at 5am this morning. I'm stuck going to work today but will go home to check on the girls and their water, feed and eggs at lunch. Glad to see the weather folks predicting above 0 temps even with the next cold/storm front this weekend!

How about eggs in the cold? Either my husband or I have been home since this cold snap started so we are able to collect several times a day. But when it's single digits outside and not much warmer in the coop, those egg can freeze quickly. This is our first winter with hens. What do you all...

It's 8.2 degrees here now - NOT ready for winter after this beautiful fall we've been enjoying! I decided not to heat the coop even though my husband wired it for a heat lamp. Seems more people recommend not using a heat lamp for a variety of reasons. We grew up in MN and I don't know anyone...

How long before a broody hen will lay eggs again?

I got two eggs from the Russians today - seems that my broody hen is back to laying! So that lasted about 2 1/2 weeks. I also noticed she's growing back some of her neck feathers that have been missing since I adopted her this summer. Guess she's getting through her molting for the season as...

How long before a broody hen will lay eggs again?

I also had a broody hen - a Russian Orloff - who's broodiness was broke about 2 weeks ago. All of my six hens have slowed down with their egg production as the days grow shorter. I can't tell if my formerly broody hen has started laying again as I have two Russian Orloffs, but I suspect the...

Awwww - too cute! I stopped by Big R last weekend to peek at the chicks. Lucky we're new to chicken raising - made it out of the store without any new babies!

    Do eggs get larger?

I recently adopted a part of a co-worker's flock of egg layers. She said she thought the eggs from her remaining hens were getting larger. I also noticed a slight increase in egg size from a couple of my hens over that past month since I've adopted them. These girls are all a year old or a...

    New chicken family

We've had a total of 6 chessies if you count my brother's who lived with us for a few years. We find them to be smart dogs, very loyal and protective as well. They seem to love kids but can be slow to warm up to adults. Since I'm vegetarian, and my husband doesn't bird hunt much, none of our...

    New chicken family

We have 2 Russian Orloffs, 2 Ideals, 1 Easter Egger and 1 Red Sex Link. They are all very good layers and we've been getting 5-6 eggs every day. I just love their little personalities! We also have two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers who are learning to tolerate their feathered friends!

    New chicken family

Hello everyone! We adopted 6 hens last weekend from a friend who is reducing the size of her flock. I never imagined how much fun raising chickens could be! This site is full of very useful information and I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time here!!
