Do you use freeze dried or live mealworms? Chicken scratch?

Oops!! I meant to say I AM taking live mealworms out to my hens. Wondered if others feed them live. To make clear, i raise the smaller of the mealworms. There are larger ones. I mistakingly bought those first and saw they were not the size we used to order online. So we returned those and got...

Do you use freeze dried or live mealworms? Chicken scratch?

I raise mealworms. I started out with 25 from a pet store and i now have millions. I just keep them swimming in old fashioned rolled oats and every4 to 5 days give them more slices of raw potato and or slices of raw carrot. Thats their moisture intake. I am not taking live ones out....when im...

    jersey giants

We have JG's and they are about 3 1/2 years old. They are huge. We dont think they are laying. We have 13 hens right now but only 3 eggs a day. 7 of them are about 1 1/2 years old. Those are the ones that are still laying. We just 4 days ago came out of a 5 month period of no eggs. I about...

    Possible 'henopause'?

I've even been farming mealworms for these gals. That's been going on for almost 2 years now. Our Jersey Giants are about the size of a turkey. I can't imagine 5 of those in the freezer. Geesh. We are not mentally able to harvest the hens. Just can't seem to do that to them. They will probably...

    Possible 'henopause'?

I forgot to mention after noting about our 14 hen not giving any eggs. They do get their crumbles and the oyster shells and the scratch. Not sure why none are laying. I will have to break down and buy eggs also. It's been about 5 years since I've had to buy eggs. ugh. The hens are good for the...

    Possible 'henopause'?

I was going to ask this too. We have 14 hens now. 1 is close to 6 years old. The next group there are 5 and they are 3 1/2 years old. Our latest ones are 1 1/2 years old. NONE ARE LAYING RIGHT NOW. Do they sync their mensi's? My goodness!! lol. Are their years over for laying? Thank you guys! :)

Muddy Run from all the rain!!! Is it healthy for my chickens? Anything I can do for it?

I know this is an old posting but my chickens too are in deep mud. I have a tunnel that I keep trying to move because our hens eat all the grass within a couple days so now they are down to dirt again and then it rains. oh dear. we try so hard to keep our hens happy ... but can't seem to keep...

what is laying mash and do hens really need it?

We can't free range ours because of the coyote's. Also the eagles will get them as they did get 5 of our cats. But they are in a huge caged area on top of grass and the area is covered by bird netting. But for food I feed the chickens, cooked rice and cooked and raw oatmeal. Along with alfalfa...

What would cause my hen to limp?

I just noticed one of my hens limping on her right leg. I don't see issues with the leg itself. thanks for these postings. I'll keep her with the other chickens, but of course keep an eye on her. :( Makes me sad to see a chicken in pain. :(

Crushed Chocolate to Chickens?Crushed Granola/Cereal Bars to Chicken?

I have a question on the LARABAR's. The apple pie and the cherry pie seem like ok to give to the hens? I have really ever only given my hens 'whole foods'. Meaning the piece of food that we grow or buy in the produce section of the stores. Besides the scratch. I do feed them popcorn and I feed...

exactly how much per chicken per day

We have built the pvc tubes for the chicken feed, but find our girls just empty the tubes out the first day by throwing it all over the ground. We have been going through a lot of feed. We have 18 hens. Trying to figure out a full proof method where we are not going through so much dry feed.

Can you give chickens their eggs scrambled?

Maybe if it's fertilized..... but ours aren't. (no rooster). I don't feel bad about it at all. It was not going to be a baby anyway.

Can you give chickens their eggs scrambled?

For us, we do not have a rooster, so this is not cannibalism because they are not fertilized eggs. Some human women eat their own placentas. I find that to be pretty gross, but it does happen and you don't hear of others having an issue about that.

Can you give chickens their eggs scrambled?

This is great information. I too have many chickens (20) and not even egg customers. We do not have a rooster. I've been scrambling up eggs and feeding it back to the girls. They love it. Glad to hear others do this. We have been wanting to grow our own food for the chickens. Well this works out...

Laying chicken laid a tiny egg today

I've gotten a few of those from my hens too. They still look like normal eggs inside. The yokes are so dang cute and small. We have jersey giants and rhode island reds.
