We've been hatching eggs for the first time. 3 chicks have successfully been moved to the brooder now (Though one needed a safety hole) but after moving them, another chick unexpectedly broke out of its shell. It's day 23. The chick seems pretty healthy- alert, active, fluffing up nicely, etc...
Update: Put a little safety hole in the shell, and being able to breathe better seemed to give the chick the strength he needed. Just pipped properly! :)
Hatch day was yesterday. The chick has been chirping in its egg for at least 16 hours with no sign of external pip. Last night, the incubator humidity dropped to 55%. Should we try to assist now? In a few hours? Tomorrow?
First time incubating chicks without a broody... So far two have hatched. The black one is Iodine and the yellowish one is Carbon. They're Lavender Orpington/EE crosses. This morning had to rush around to get an indoor temporary brooder set up because our usual one is outdoors, and today it snowed!
What sorts of problems have you been having in particular? If it's social- whether they get along or not- really, that depends on a lot of factors; their breed, the amount of space you're giving them, enrichment, the hen/roo ratio, health, their individual personalities, etc. It might change...
Hi, is it alright if I join the chat here? I'm Hodges, pronouns he/they- he/him preferred, but they/them is alright too, and I'm aro/ace and transgender. I like to draw, read, and play piano, and I have 16 chickens :)
I used to have an account here, but I have since forgotten what my username + password were... so, new account it is! I was last on here around 2021, I think?
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Not new to chickens- got 7 chicks back in May, 2020, and haven't looked...
