Put some of those crawl space vents in the coop, they work well, and get at least one driveway alarm ($15), they will even wake you when you are asleep.
Yearling bears, esp. males are like gang members, a lot of them are scared of nothing. Electric fence helps, klaxon horns help (me, and I live a 1/4 mile from a neighbor), security lights that are motion detection help. But reality is they smell food, and now this one smells chickens. Sadly...
My, what a lecture. I think we all have different ways of dealing with this problem and by posting them we all learn. As a First Nations person I think we need to share info and respect those "vermin" you speak of but that is just my way. Lots of room for lots of opinions.
We have an unending supply of critters, like racoons and the bears that think dead ones are yummy. And I don't want to deal with dead or hurt animals. Far easier to think of ways to protect my hens. I suppose traps would work for an urban area as long as kids were kept away.
Here is a view of the hawk fencing. You can also see where we used some old plastic lattice for a safety tunnel. The wire fencing also runs along the section against the house.
Snow fence comes in rolls, fairly inexpensive, use zip ties or even string to attach to the top of the fencing you have, pvc pipe will hold it up is you run it across the top of the existing fence and is cheap this time of year.
I use snow fence around the tomatoes because hens eat blooms and...
You might also buy a few air horns, They run about $13 and are available where there are boating supplies. They are air cans with a horn on top with a button you depress, really really loud. Canines hate them. We have problems with owls, eagles and hawks so have hung long strips of that...
Keep in mind an electric fence will kill your hens if they come in contact. We fenced a large area (~1/8 acre) with 5' wire using metal posts you pound in with a sledge hammer. We threaded the top with 3/4" pvc to stabilize it. It keeps out animals wandering by but not bears or any animal...
We had to take Crazie Chickie to the our original vet this morning and have her put down. She just couldn't recover from the Bear injuries. When she couldn't walk this morning, it was time. Rest in Peace. The other hens are very upset, so we will be having a quiet day and watermelon for the wake.
Hi, Well live in the Blue Mtns of Oregon, down a dirt road off a highway in the back of nowhere. We have lots of wildlife (cougar, bears, lynx, fox, coyote, deer, elk) . The hens have a secure house and about a 1/8 acre of fenced (5') to run around in and until this year we really had no...
