I've not dealt with a prolapsed chicken, but i know in other livestock like sheep and pigs, they sometimes do a stitch to hold it in until it calms down. Sound like you need vet services.
BTW, she has 3 chicks nestled in there... and because to a mother's dismay (& joy) there is sometimes one child that's a free-bird at heart, notice the 4th chick up on a wire hanging from the rafters (**the picture of my free spirited chick is not a content entry). Human moms, I know some of you...
Entry #4. I only entered 3 pictures earlier because I was convinced another great moment would come along. Well, I went to close up the coop tonight and found that mama had decided it was time to move her brood out of the nursery nest and up to the roost with the rest of the flock. She...
thank you! Yes, 4 chicks hatched on easter morning. They are now nearly 5 weeks old and it's a surprise every morning to see how much they've changed overnight. This is my first time raising chicks with a broody mama. I'm thrilled at what an easy and natural experience the whole process has...
4 weeks 2 days, they're fully incorporated into the flock. mama brought them outside at less than 3 weeks (even with continuing cold temps). I'm just amazed at how natural and wonderful this process has been. I'm trying to decide with photo to submit for the contest. Narrowed it down to 2...
Quick update. 4 chicks are thriving. Mama is doing a great job with them. She has introduced them to the flock & going well. She's more tolerant of certain hens and has put a couple others in their place who she thinks were getting too friendly (especially the other black hen that was broody.)...
Ok, She is in a second wire dog crate, outside where it is cool, with food and water and a roost. She's not happy about it. I hope it doesn't take long. (see picture, she has lots of company to help her along)
I pulled the last egg, it did indeed make a slosh when I shook it. I set the chicks...
I did give mom some water chick feed in the nest - she loved it but I'll stop doing that. I can see how it might delay her from getting up and taking her chicks out. That almost dead baby from last night is doing great! All 4 look lively. I read to give until day 23 before removing a...
We have 4 chicks and one egg that hasn't had any action yet. Momma still has her brood in the nesting box - I'm guessing she is waiting on that last egg? I offered her food and water late last night and she drank and ate like she was dying for it. Today is day 22 so I"m guessing it's smart to...
Happy Easter everyone! Happy to report I have a least 4 (maybe all 5) live chicks! I haven't wanted to lift her to see for sure if its 4 or 5. Two arrived yesterday and the others this Easter morning! Wonderful advice, Mrs. K... I'm hoping my experience is a lot like yours.
I had the flock...
