That's an impressive list!
I do have an update for mine, though -- the Penedesenca boys went to their new home last Wednesday. Thx for remembering me, though, even if I can't go to the swap
Hi, folks -
I only recently became aware of the swaps and can't make the next one, but I have some partridge Penedesenca cockerels that are looking for a new home. I have two that are about 10 weeks old that would need to go pretty soon, and another four that are about 6 weeks old. I'd...
Thanks for the confirmation, folks. I'm in town and will have to re-home them, unfortunately. I hope someone in the area is interested because I do think they are going to be pretty stunning.
These two birds were the sole survivors of my first attempt at hatching chicks at home. (I'm happy to say that the hatch rate jumped to a more respectable 64% [shipped eggs] on the next try.)
I've been thinking these were both boys because of their coloration at hatch time, but I'm seeing some...
The lab was quick! I took the remains in at 8:30 and got a report by phone just before 2:00.
So... the probable cause of death was systemic bacterial infection. There was inflammation around the heart consistent with E. coli. The antibiotic I used woudn't have been effective with E. coli, but...
Thanks all for the kind words.
As much as I'd love another cute penciled runner as a brooder buddy, the next move will probably be to put the fawn/white in with the main flock. She's coming on 2 months of age now--a little earlier than I'd want to put her out of the brooder, but way too big to...
Bad news -- the penciled runner didn't make it.
I really thought as late as Thursday that she was getting better. I may take her in for a necropsy. Anybody know how they'd want the body preserved until the lab opens on Monday?
Update time.
Things were going fine through yesterday - Duck 2 fought off whatever this was and is doing super. Duck 1 was on amprolium and tetracycline through yesterday and was eating better every day and starting to move around a bit, though not standing all the way up very much. Today she...
Don't think it's the niacin this time - they've been getting supplemental niacin since day 1 either in their water or crushed in their feed. There are so many variables, aren't there!?
Thanks for all the advice and links.
They're hanging in still. Duck 1 (I need to find names if they make it through this) had some normal-ish droppings and is eating a little better today. Duck 2 seems less affected and has kept eating well. I don't know if it was the amprolium, antibiotic, or...
Good point, brenna. They're on Flock Raiser with rolled oats mixed in (maybe up to 20% oatmeal) plus a few greens. The photo was from one of their few supervised excursions out back. They are otherwise still living in a big ol' plastic tub with a coated wire hardware cloth floor over horse stall...
Long time lurker, first time poster, etc.... hope there's someone who might be able to help.
I have two young runners (fawn/white and penciled, from Holderread's) that were thriving and are suddenly very bad off w/suppressed appetite, mostly white diarrhea, and having difficulty standing. One...
