So true! So many people I know can't fathom eating something we raised. That's exactly how I explain it to people-I know they lived a great life, were well cared for and respectively processed. And in the end when they're all packaged up, I don't know if I'm cooking the roo that attacked me or...
I will be processing turkeys for the first time in a couple of weeks. Other than size, any differences between chickens and turkeys I need to know about?
Our flock numbers were cut in half yesterday as processed our meat birds and 2 of our roos. I keep the birds in the fridge for 2-3 days before freezing them. I feel them to see if rigor has fully released before they go to the freezer. Hope that helps!
I watch that same video as a "refresher"...
It's on the bottom of the front page-small letters-right next to the editor's contact info. Is your local paper owned by Gannett? I believe all of their US newspapers are printed with soy based ink
Nearly all modern ink on newspapers (NOT magazines) is soy. I happen to know for sure my local papers use soy ink because it's printed right on the front page. I don't worry about the soy and my plants, but that's my opinion. That concern would also carry over to printed cardboard, as it would...
It's the creosote in the wood that can leach out into the vegetables. I have no idea how long it will continue to leach out-and I'm not sure at what levels it would either. But I'm assuming that a lot of folks that want to grow their own food do it because you can control what is (or is not) in...
I know lots of people that have used the railroad ties in raised beds, and they're all still alive and well! I was just pointing out the *possible* concerns-just want everyone to make an informed decision :)
Pressboard will rot. I would check with livestock farmers for their scrap wood. I was able to get a whole truck load from a guy who had put up a new fence a few years back. He had all the old fencing sitting in a pile on his property, just waiting for someone to take it! It's really nice oak and...
Word of caution about rail road timbers-preservative chemicals could leach out into the soil and into your plants. Here's a good neutral response to that: http://www.bhg.com/advice/gardening/vegetable/are-railroad-ties-okay-to-use-to-construct-vegetable-gardens/
Sorry...I can't help you out with specific crops. I'm in Indiana, so totally different climates! I would find the land grant university in your area and talk to their extension agents, or talk to your local master gardeners associations. For my backyard garden, I cover crop with radishes and...
grassy areas between production areas are filter strips. Filter strips decrease erosion and trap excess nutrients (such as phosphorus and nitrogen) before they enter waterways. Filter strips increase soil health and water quality-both important to agriculture and the environment as a whole...
Ours love mice. It really freaked me out the first time it happened, but with all the harvesting going on around us right now, it seems like every day we see them playing "catch" with at least one. Poor little mice are probably out trying to stockpile for the winter and have the dumb luck of...
